Springiest celebrates the season with G-Love concert by MEGAN O’BRIEN A & E Editor Springfest 2000 kicked off its celebra tions with Monday’s “Spirit of Wilming ton” theme and Tuesday’s “Baywatching in California.” Wednesday’s theme of “Long Island Leisure,” Thursday’s “Hang Loose in Hawaii” and Friday’s G-Love and Special Sauce concert will conclude the week of the Association for Campus Entertainment’s (ACE) celebration of spring. The overall theme of the week is “Surfin’ USA.” Each day focuses on a dif ferent coastal city or region. “I liked Homecoming last year, when we visited different cities, kind of a theme day for everything, and that’s what I tried to do again,” Springfest chair Natalie Kreeger said. Monday started with a clothing drive from noon to 2 p.m. in the Warwick Cen ter. “It’s a hurricane hotspot here, so get ting ready for the hurricane season and things like that, but at the same time we’re showing school spirit,” Kreeger said. At 7 p.m., Wilmington mayor David Jones spoke in the Warwick Center Ballroom about the history of Wilmington and ways to get involved in the community . Kreeger had scheduled a speaker from the Cape Fear Museum, but he cancelled at the last minute. Kreeger called the public information office and asked if they could find another speaker. April 5, she was informed that the mayor could come. Which is 10 times better than what we had, so that’s pretty awesome, but it was last minute,” Kreeger said. Tuesday’s festivities included the grand opening of the new student recreation cen ter. “My whole day was wiped out because of that, so we just decided to participate with the university,” Kreeger said. The other Tuesday night event was a version of “Who Wants to Be a Million aire?” in the Hawk’s Nest at 8 p.m. The grand prize was $100 instead of $1 mil lion, but as Kreeger said, “you’re going to walk away with something.” Today’s theme is “Long Island Lei sure.” I Love NY Pizza donated pizzas, available in the Union at noon, and come dian Brad Trackman will perform at the Hawk’s Nest at 8 p.m. Tomorrow will be the final theme day, “Hang Loose in Hawaii.” The day’s only event is a luau featuring the Polynesian Culture Band and a Polynesian-style din ner for the first 150 people at the gazebo, behind the apartments. Dinner starts at 6 p.m. and the show to follow at 7 p.m. “We’re not going to roast a pig, but we’re going to have Polynesian type food,” Kreeger said. Tickets for the event were $5, but last week they cancelled the admission price. “We made so much money off of the Kevin Smith event....that we were able to compensate for this and give it to the stu dents for free.” The luau was one of Kreeger’s main fo cuses for the week. “Sometimes the university gets stuck doing the same thing over and over, but this is something totally different. We’ve never had a luau before,” Kreeger said. The G-Love and Special Sauce concert concludes the week, but wasn’t in Kreeger’s original plans. “It just happened that way,” she said. “The concert was already planned, so I just moved my week from Monday through Thursday so that the concert would end it on Friday.” Tickets for the concert cost $ 10 for stu dents and $15 for the general public in ad vance, and $18 at the door. “Because of our commitment to keep minimal costs...all the events of that week are free, except for the G-Love show,” Campus Activities Coordinator Ian Mar tin said. “We couldn’t afford to have them otherwise; it would effect our other pro gramming.” ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT April 12,2000 • theSeahawk 17 HIRH UJ/\S BEAmED UR mmm viGGieD Her NOse.
