SPORTS Women’s softball preparing for Southern Conference 21 by LAKESHA HATCHER Staff Writer The women’s softball team is prepar ing for the last stretch of the season. With Southern Conference play coming up, the Lady Seahawks are trying to stay healthy and finish the season strong. Currently their record is 15-22, with a conference record of 2-2. Leading hitters and good defense are the main secrects to their success. The Lady Seahawks used the entire month of March as preparation for Southern Conference play. Spring Break proved to be very valu able as the team was faced with tough competition, and some tough obstacles. “We’ve had to move things around because of serious injuries,” said coach Maggie St. Ledger. Among others, starter Emily Hayes had to sit out part of the season due to shoulder surgery. Though the Lady Seahawks are bat tling through injuries, they’re not tak ing it lightly. St. Ledger credits the sur vival of the team to many key players. Among them, Susanna Rabon is the leading hitter with a .315 batting aver age and keen offensive skill. As for de fense, Chrissy Bennett plays outstand ingly at second base. The team has had to work hard to compete because of a very young pitch ing section - and in order to do well in the Southern Conference, the Lady Seahawks have to improve their hitting. Chrissy Bennet and Maggie Johnson both share a batting average of .255; next in line is Roxanne Mills with .245, and Susan Hilliard with an average of .237. Maggie Johnson leads the Lady Seahawks in RBIs, with 20 so far in the season. Johnson is also the team leader for doubles hitting. The Lady Seahawks have a variety of talents and strengths on their squad: Susan Hilliard is the leading triple hit ter with two, and Raena Jones has a to tal of eight stolen bases. Pitcher Mandi Westbury only allowed one home run this season, while sopho more pitcher Kelly Givens has only al lowed two. The softball team plays at UNC this afternoon, and will travel to UNC - Greensboro for a showdown on Satur day at 3 p.m. The Seahaik is nouj accepting applica tions for Sports editor, Assistant Sports editor, and sports staff lurit- ers for the 2000-2001 school year.
