SPORTS OQ —~T~—T“^— April 12,2000 • the Seahawk ^ Students get mucked up with oozeball 2000 on April 1 A crowd of students got dirty while having good clean fun at the Ambassa dors oozeball game on April 1st. by LAURA SOUTHERLAND Staff Writer Where could you spend an entire day rolling around in the mud and playing volleyball? That was just what happened at the UNCW Gazebo Sunday, April I from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. as Oozeball 2000 drew a crowd for some messy fun. The UNCW Ambassadors, a service organization, sponsors this event on campus annually, with support from lo cal restaurants that donated free food. "The main goal of this event is to have a good time and get the students involved here on campus,” said Malissa Moore, the Oozeball committee chair. The UNCW Ambassadors' primary function is student service. They pro vide tours to prospective students and work closely with the Chancellor on various projects and events for students and alumni of UNCW. The small amount of money that Oozeball brings in is used for the Am bassadors' service functions, but the event is more appropriately called a “fun-raiser” to draw student attention to the group. This Is how it works: take volleyball, add a lot of water and mud, and you have Oozeball. Two courts were literally dug from the lawn near the Gazebo, and four teams at a time took part in competition. Each team consisted of six to eight play ers; the teams are required to be co-ed with at least two players of the same sex on each team. Anyone was eligible to play: stu dents, staff, faculty, family members, or members of the community - but one UNCW student is required on cach team. "Who wouldn't want to roll around in the mud?" said Ambassadors mem ber Malt Hicks. The game uses rally scoring, w ith the winner of each round scoring a point no matter who served the ball. Play consists of two 10-minute halves, where after the first half the teams switch sides. There is no limit on how many points are scored, as the game ends when lime runs out. There was no Oozeball competition in 1999, but in 1998 approximately 108 participants came out for the grimy competirton. 98 participants registered this year. "I saw people doing this two years ago and I swore that I would do it be fore I graduated. I am a senior, so I guess this is my only chance," said player Shelly Long, who played in this year's event. "My committee and fellow ambas sadors worked really hard into creating this year’s Oozeball 2000. Even if you weren't playing, it was fun to slop by and watch the craziness," Moore said.
