22 THE Seahawk/August 24,2DDD Mens soccer begins high spirited season Jessie Nunery Staff Writer As the old cliche goes, there is no‘T’ in team. As the UNCW Men’s Soccer team prepares for the upcoming 2000 season, that cliche has never been more important. After coming off a disaf^inting, injuiy plagued and hurricane-altered 8-11-1 sea son last year, this year’s team hopes to not only improve their record, but their team chemistry. “Last year we had a couple of superstars, this year we have the best team spirit and attitude in years,” said sophomore midfielder Austin MacPhee. This year’s team has been doing the small things to bring about greater unity. A preseason meal at a local restau rant and attending a Wilmington Hammer heads game as a team are just two of the ways they have bonded this preseason. The captains have also been active in encour agement on and off the field. “We have to be ccrfiesive, play well, and be willing to work hani for each other as a group,” said Coach Keith Cammidge. This year’s team will feature a more co hesive group, but will also be one that has many questions to address. The team must replace two-time MVP and three-time all- CAA midfielder Jean Kotze, who now plays pnafessionally, and midfielder Ahmed .-.1 Jsmes Fkni/ The Saahawk Junior James Talmage with the help of his teammates attempts to score for UNCW. El Rafei, the team’s second leading scorer fiom last season. Five starters and twelve lettermen are returning this season. Also returning are the Seahawks’ two goalkeepers, Harri Staven and Bill Mills, giv ing the team stability in an all-too-important position. Coach Cammidge says it’s not clear which one will start, but he is comfortable with both. Not only is the goalkeeper’s job up for grabs, but just about anyone at any time may start and will be expected to play hard, including fieshmen. “I have a policy not to burden new fresh men with expectations, but some fieshmen are doing better that expected at this stage, most do have the potential to do well and will have a chance to start,” said Cammidge. This year’s version of “Dub Soccer,” as the players refer to themselves, will try to reach its goal of a winning season by play ing an attacking style, unlike that of the moie defensive style that the team has shown in past years. The new style will be key if they are to succeed in a conference that features teams like James Madison, VCU, and Rich mond. To top it all off, the schedule includes a visit fiom the Wake Forest Demon Dea cons, which is currently ranked sixth in the nation. The conference championship will be up for grabs as a result of changes in the CAA. Richmond, American, and ECU face the Seahawks in regular season play, but will not take part in the conference championship. That will make the race open, but does not exactly comfort the Seahawks. “The stan dard is always high in the CAA. As long as we stay tight as a team, we’ll do fine,” said Assistant Coach Aaron Comelison.
