The team pre pared for Brett Blizzard too. After the tip-off, however, UNC Wilmington junior Anthony Terrell surfaced as the unsuspect ed threat against a Buccaneers’ win. The 6-foot-7 forward’s per formance was the key ingredient to the Seahawks’ 78-57 rout over ETSU (1-2) in front of Trask Coliseum’s 4,358 spectators Saturday afternoon. “I thought Terrell played tremendous,” ETSU coach Ed DeChellis said. “We weren’t counting on that.” Terrell, who averaged seven points and 4.5 rebounds in the first two games of the year, scored 20 and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds for UNCW (2-1). “Coach (Brad Brownell) wants other guys to step up because you can’t have just (Blizzard) and (Callahan) doing all the work,” Terrell said. DeChelhs said he thought his team marked the right two Seahawks. “We knew obviously Blizzard was a very good player and Callahan was a very good player. Blizzard’s going to get his 20 (points). We tried to really work on Callahan and try to keep him from getting the ball.” The Seahawks seniors dis played a typical all-star show despite the Bucs' pressure. Blizzard nailed eight of 16 shots — including five three-pointers — for a game-high 21 points. The guard from Tallahassee, Fla. also made seven rebounds, five assists, two blocks and four steals. Callahan, a forward from Cascade, Iowa, added 12 points, seven rebounds and a career-high five assists. Blizzard and Callahan have now won all four of their sea son home openers at UNCW. Terrell’s y' t f Seahawks gave up 14 after averaging over 20 for the first two games. U N C W ’ s defense played a big factor as well. Four of t h e unsuspected mance 1 to fans because of his nag ging ankle. “It bothered me,” said Terrell, a Rowlett, Texas native. “But I couldn’t think about it because I was worried about thing bigger.” Terrell and the Seahawks may have had concerns about a victory, but they did not show any. UNCW looked comfort able and in control on the court for the entire 40 minutes. The Seahawks led by an average of 10 points throughout the game, shooting 47.5 percent from the field. “Coach (Brownell) has been on other guys talking about we need more scorers,” Blizzard said. “We’ve got to have this type of scoring in order for us to get back to the tournament. Guys stepped up tonight and made plays.” Another reason for the success was a reduction of turnovers. The Bucs’ five starters came into the game averaging double figures in scoring, yet only two players made it past six points Saturday. Sophomore guard Tiras Wade led ETSU with 21 points (lO-for-20), and freshman guard Tim Smith hit six of 15 shots for 14 points off the bench. The Bucs shot 39.7 percent overall. The Seahawks out-rebounded the Bucs, 41 to 34. UNCW was ahead by nine points within five minutes of the tip-off. ETSU did not move the ball well inside the paint. The Bucs did not have enough off-the- ball movement to get teammates open for passes. The Seahawks took advantage of the mistakes, scoring 38 points off turnovers for the game. After a 42-31 halftime lead, UNCW allowed ETSU to cut the margin to seven. The Bucs tallied eight points on a series of fast breaks to open the Bucs' second- half scoring. Three quick ETSU fouls dur ing the 15-minute interval turned the momentum back to UNCW, however. The Seahawks outscored the Bucs 21-9 over the next 10 minutes of the game. UNCW spent the final five minutes breaking the ETSU press by continu ing to control the ball movement and not commit ting any turnovers. A LOOK BEYOND The Seahawks contin ued the 2002-03 cam paign Monday in Bridgeport, Conn. against Fairfield. The Stags upset UNCW, 69-60. Saturday, the Seahawks take on the University of Dayton in Dayton, Ohio. The two teams last met in the first round of the NIT in 2001. The Flyers were victorious, 68-59. UNCW returns home Wednesday, Dec. 11, to face Campbell at 7 p.m.
