Daniel Thomas McGregor, a 20-year-old from Cary, died last Saturday morning due to injuries he suffered in the accident. “Danny always had a smile on his face...” McGregor was studying busi ness and computer science. He graduated with honors from Apex High School in 2001, where he was a member of the school’s ten nis team and an avid street hock ey player, boater and snowboard enthusiast. After his freshman year at UNCW, he was accepted into the Delta Tau Delta fraternity, where Visit Us www.theseahawk.org he formed new friendships and volunteered as a tutor to elemen tary school students. “He was always the life of the party, and he always had a smile on his face,” said Matt Salerno, president of Delta Tau Delta. “Danny always had a smile on his face and I can never remember him being in a bad mood. He is someone you know you can talk to and count on for anything,” said Ian Nott, also a Delta Tau Delta fraternity brother. McGregor, a sophomore, loved hanging out with his friends and participating in fraternity and community events. McGregor was very active in the Delta Tau Delta community service and fund-raising events, such as Adopt-A-School, Adopt- A-Spot and Relay for Life. “It’s just the things he did,” Nott said. “He was always look ing out for his friends, making sure no one was driving under the influence. If he was designated driver" he would drive until the early morning hours because he wanted to make sure his fraternity brothers or friends made it home safely.” Many students traveled to Apex for the wake and funeral services March 19, 2003 at New Horizons Fellowship Church. New chancellor aboard OP/ED 4 Kiara Jones Staff Writer The Warwick Center BaUroom was almost filled to capacity Friday as students, faculty, staff and community members gath ered to welcome and meet UNCW’s new chancellor-elect. Dr Rosemary DePaolo was picked by the UNC Board of Oovemors out of about 130 appli cants to be UNCW’s new chan cellor. DePaolo will replace cur rent chancellor James R. Leutze, who announced in July that he would be retiring at the close of Inside This Issue this academic year. DePaolo has been descrtbed as tenacious, creative, timeless and focused. “I will not rest until UNCW is not only recognized as one of the top 10 universities, but until we are preeminent in the southeast at least,” DePaolo said. DePaolo earned her bachelors’ degree in English from Queens College of the City University of New York, and was a Woodrow Wilson Fellow at Rutgers where she earned her master’s and doctoral degrees in 18th-century English Literature. She was president of Georgia College and State University for six years. DePaolo brings outstanding leadership and administration skills and phenomenal fundraising abilities in the private and public sectors. She and her husband, Fred Wharton, will reside in Kenan House. Associate Vice Chancellor/ Dean of Students Terrence Curran expressed his excitement about DePaolo’s position.
