So far, Albataineh has been charged with one misdemeanor count of voyeurism. Albataineh, 28, was released on $10,000 bond. The chemistry major has been banned from the UNCW campus until his case is completely reviewed by authorities. The first complaint against Albataineh was reported on Aug. 15 when a 25-year-old student informed an employee of the University Union that someone was videotaping her in the restroom. The employee, UNCW senior Katelyn Leary, then placed a call to University Police. “I was working the info desk when a girl came up to the desk and said that a man had been tap ing her in the bathroom. I called campus police and they came to the Union but couldn’t find anyone or anything,” Leary said. The second complaint against Albataineh was reported on Aug. 22, when a 19- year-old student said that she was being videotaped in a restroom in Friday Hall. It is believed that Albataineh had been secretly videotaping women in restrooms around campus for at least two months. Footage of several other women was discovered on a handheld camera that was confiscat ed from Albataineh. The new Union will be the centerpiece of a student centered UNCW campus, containing a larger number of stu dent services. The $30 million project will be completed in 2006. Alisha Gore Senior Staff Writer The official groundbreaking ceremony for the new University Union building was held on August 18, 2004. The slogan of the event was “To form a more perfect Uni on.” Participants in the event includ ed UNCW Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo, Vice Chancellors Pat Leonard and Ron Core, SGA president Zachary Wynne, and University Union staff member Holly Manley. Unveiled at the event was a poster that displayed a copy of the bronze plaque that will serve as the building cornerstone. The plaque was a gift to UNCW by last year’s graduating class. Artwork by 2002 UNCW graduate James Fulcher was also unveiled at the event. The building of the University Union is a three-phase project. The first phase consists of the building of the new Union. The second phase is the renovation of the existing University Union, and the third phase is the renovation of the Burney Student Support Center. A courtyard and a colonnade will also be constructed to join the three facilities. “The new union will be completed by January 2006,” University Union Director Carolyn Farley said. “The old Union and the Burney Center renovation will be completed by November, 2006.” The project is estimated to cost nearly $30 million dollars. This fee will be paid entirely by student fees and monetary contri butions from the UNCW bookstore and UNCW food service. The new student union will host a variety of new and existing ser vices. Edwards' fundamental points covered foreign re lations. He and John Kerry envision a foreign policy that won't alienate other countries and undermine the war on terror, he said. Visiting the Cape Fear region for only a few days, the North Carolina senator's appearance marks the second major political figure to come to the school in the heightening political campaign.
