UNCW student Marwan
Albataineh was arrested Aug. 22
on charges of secretly videotap
ing women in restrooms located
in Friday Hall and the University
Union. So far, Albataineh has been
charged with one misdemeanor
count of voyeurism. Albataineh, 28,
was released on $10,000 bond. The
chemistry major has been banned
from the UNCW campus until his
case is completely reviewed by
authorities.
The first complaint against
Albataineh was reported on Aug. 15
when a 25-year-old student informed
an employee of the University Union
that someone was videotaping her in
the restroom. The employee, UNCW
senior Katelyn Leary, then placed a
call to University Police.
“I was working the info desk
when a girl came up to the desk
and said that a man had been tap
ing her in the bathroom. I called
campus police and they came to the
Union but couldn’t find anyone or
anything,” Leary said. The second
complaint against Albataineh was
reported on Aug. 22, when a 19-
year-old student said that she was
being videotaped in a restroom in
Friday Hall.
It is believed that Albataineh had
been secretly videotaping women in
restrooms around campus for at
least two months. Footage of several
other women was discovered on a
handheld camera that was confiscat
ed from Albataineh. These women
have not been identified.
“I ask that women consider their
activities during the past two months

The official groundbreaking
ceremony for the new University
Union building was held on August
18, 2004. The slogan of the event
was “To form a more perfect Uni
on.”
Participants in the event includ
ed UNCW Chancellor Rosemary
DePaolo, Vice Chancellors Pat
Leonard and Ron Core, SGA
president Zachary Wynne, and
University Union staff member
Holly Manley. Unveiled at the event
was a poster that displayed a copy of
the bronze plaque that will serve as
the building cornerstone. The plaque
was a gift to UNCW by last year’s
graduating class. Artwork by 2002
UNCW graduate James Fulcher
was also unveiled at the event.
The building of the
University Union is a three-phase
project. The first phase consists of
the building of the new Union. The
second phase is the renovation of
the existing University Union, and
the third phase is the renovation of
the Burney Student Support Center.
A courtyard and a colonnade will
also be constructed to join the three
facilities.
“The new union will be completed
by January 2006,” University Union
Director Carolyn Farley said. “The
old Union and the Burney Center
renovation will be completed by
November, 2006.” The project is
estimated to cost nearly $30 million
dollars. This fee will be paid entirely
by student fees and monetary contri
butions from the UNCW bookstore
and UNCW food service.
The new student union will host
a variety of new and existing ser
vices. Some of the services offered
include a movie theatre, expanded

"No one nation alone
can bring peace.". Harry S. Truman
Sen. John Edwards quoted the war-time president
during his visit to UNCW on Monday. "For p years,
our presidents have lead America down this strong
and powerful path," he said, "until now."
Edwards' fundamental points covered foreign re
lations. He and John Kerry envision a foreign policy
that won't alienate other countries and undermine the
war on terror, he said.
Visiting the Cape Fear region for only a few days,
the North Carolina senator's appearance marks the
second major political figure to come to the school in
the heightening political campaign. Laura Bush spoke
in the Warwick Center on July 30, campaigning for
Richard Burr.
