the Seahawk | NEWS | January 20, 2005 from PARKING page 1 “She just smiled and said, ‘Sir, I’m late to my 8 o’clock class, so I’ll leave the car here.’ So, she got a ticket.” One student who collected a lot of tickets last semester was Latonia Richardson. “I had over $500 worth,” she said. “I think it was at least 16 tickets.” Why so many? “Most of the time it was overdue meters,” Richardson, a junior English major, explained. “I got kind of mad, because sometimes the meter ran out a minute before 1 got back to the car. I sure wasn’t happy about it.” This semester she’s taking the shuttle to school. Andrea Elleston got six tickets last year. “The only one that really bothered me was for parking in a handicapped zone and I wasn’t in that zone,” Elleston said. “It was a $172 fine.” Elleston decided to fight back. “I got out my camera and took a picture of my car, showing, while I was wrong, I was in a reserved area, but not handicapped. So they dropped the ticket,” Elleston said. But that ticket shocked her. “I learned my lesson. I don’t park illegally anymore,” Elleston said. Parking and Transportation Manager Gwen Bolden, who supplied the data on the tickets, said that while the UNCW police department also write tickets, 90% are writ ten by the 10 parking officers. Student park ing permits range in price from $130 to $172. Faculty and staff permits range from $86 to $272, Bolden said. The parking team is on duty Monday thru Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. from FAIR page 1 Screaming Seahawks, as well as many Greek organizations. Every student organization on campus was encouraged to take part in the fair. “We invited all student organizations to attend. Sixty-eight organizations attended which is really good,” Campus Activities Coordinator Larissa LaCour said. While the event was informative to all students, the main goal of the fair was to help students who have just started attending UNCW in the spring. “We target transfer students; its our oppor tunity to show what’s on campus and how to get involved,” LaCour said. Adams, along with other student organiza tion members, had hoped to see more students stop by the fair. Although many organizations were able to represent themselves at the fair, the student turnout was not as high as expected. “The fair is a good way to get freshman involved. It is usually better in the fall when we are outside though,” she said. CRIMINAL DEFENSE • PERSONAL INJURY THOMAS C. GOOLSBY, MBA, JD Trial Attomev, Professor of Law » Former Legai Couns«.
