MARCH 20, 1962 THE LANCE PAGE THREE Meet The Candidates St. Andrews Student Government Association President The top office of the Student Government Association is per haps the most responsible posi tion on campus. The president is considered the official rep resentative of the student body. His main duty is the leader ship of the Student Council, as he has the power of calling and presiding over all meetings. He is also to exercise this pow er in all meetings of the stu dent body. The president is charged with appointing committees and fill ing positions not specified in the Constitution. He does this with the consent of the Sen ate. Vice-President The vice-president of the Stu dent Government Association acts as second in command to the president. He must assume all duties of the president in his absence for any length of time or at the president’s re quest. If for any reason the president’s office is vacated the vice-president assumes full du ties of the president of the SGA. The vice-president of the Stu dent Government Association also acts as chairman of the Senate and calls and presides at all meetings of this body. WAYNE BALLARD Wayne, a business major from Wadesboro, N. C., spent his freshman and sophomore years at Wingate College. There he received the Improvement Cup in his sophomore year, the highest of three awards given annually at Wingate. He was also in the Drama Club. At St. Andrews Wayne is on the senate, and was chairman of the constitution committee. Secretary The secretary of the Student Government Association per forms the usual duties of this office in our student govern ment. This responsibility of this of fice involves keeping the min utes of all meetings of the SGA and of the Student Council. A copy of the minutes must be posted in the student center by the secretary, and a permanent copy must be kept. The secretary also holds the responsibility of communica tion between the Student Coun cil and the dean of student’s of fice on any decisions or recom mendations. The secretary must also han dle all correspondence of the SGA. PHYLLIS CAROL BROOKS Carol was an honor roll stu dent at FMC, as well as being Freshman May Court Attend ant, on the Student Council, and receiving the Latin Award. She is presently treasurer of the St. Andrews SGA, and a niember of the National Educa tion Association. Carol’s main studies are French and History. She is a resident of Charlotte, N. C. Treasurer The treasurer of the SGA is to maintain a permanent record of all financial transactions of the Student Government Asso ciation. It is the duty of the treasurer to formulate a budget for the coming year. This is done in consultation with the budget committee. The treasurer makes semi annual budget reports to the SGA and quarterly reports to the Senate. He must consult with the Business Manager of the college relative to disburse ments. He must submit the treasurer’s books to the Busi ness Office once per semester and/or at the request of the office to be audited. The treasurer is a member of the Student Council. Student Center Board Pres. The president of the Student Center Board is in complete charge of the work of the Stu dent Center Board. He caUs and presides over the meetings of this organization. He serves as the student host or hostess for the college. The president is also to assist the Student Center Director in co-ordinating the Student Cen ter calendar. It is the respon sibility of the president to maintidn the social standards of the Student Center as set by the Student Center Board. In addiion to these respon sibilities the president of the Student Center Board repre sents his area of campus life on the Student Council. WAYNE LARRY FOWLER A Junior transfer from Pres byterian Junior College, Larry Fowler has been very active in student government affairs both at PJC and St. Andrews. He served as Secretary-Treas- urer of the PJC Student Coun cil and was voted one of the outstanding Sophomores there, At St. Andrews he has held the position of President of the Stu dent Center Board, member of the Student Council, member of the Senate, member of Orange Dormitory Council and member of the Elections Committee. Larry is interested in making a career in accounting. FAYE FAYE HOOKS Alice Faye Hooks, from Fay etteville, North Carolina, last year was secretary of the FMC Student Government Associa tion and a member of the Stu dent Council, and also presi dent of the sophomore class. She was World University Serv ice campus representative and a member of the Student Fac ulty Co-operative Committee. This year Faye is a member of the SGA Steering Commit tee, secretary of the Student Council and a member of the Senate. Her major is Elemen tary Education. TED TED GOLDTHOBPE A junior from Charleston, West Va., Ted transfered from Hampden-Sidney College in Vir ginia. While at Hampden-Sid ney he served on the intramural committee and on a Ccimpus social committee, as well as be ing sports editor of the paper there. Ted was a day student first semester. NANCI CROWELL Nanci Crowell comes to us from Colonial Heights, Virginia. She attended FMC where she was president of the Classical Club, Prayerband Leader, mem ber of Epsilon Chi Society, Sophomore class editor for an nual and was on the Dean’s List with regularity. She has served as co-social director for the Officer’s Club at Fort Lee, Virginia for the past three sumimers where she aided in co-ordinating all social activi ties for the officers, their wives, and the bachelor officers. Nanci is on the staff of THE LAMP AND SHIELD and is a member of the Student Center Board. LARRY FOWLER PEGGY PEGGY JONES Peggy Jones, a junior from Fayetteville, North Carolina, is majoring in Social Studies. She attended FMC last year and was on the Dean’s List both semesters. Here at St. Andrews she has served on the Honor Council and the Student Center Board. Peggy was elected to the Honor Council for one term I representing the junior class. CAROL MARJORIE RHEM A sophomore from Charlotte, North Carolina, Marjorie Rhem is planning to major in Mathe matics. She is a transfer from FMC and served the freshman class as one of their officers. Marjorie was also listed on the Dean’s List while at FMC. This year at St. Andrews Marjorie has been a Big Sister. MARJORIE NANCI iSOiiWOOD NORWOOD MADDRY Norwood Maddry, a sopho more from Lumberton, N. C., transferred to St. Andrews from the University of North Carolina. While at the Univer sity, 'he served on the Fresh man Board of Directors. Inter ested in the Peace Corps, Nor wood has already taken some preliminary tests for that group. Here at St. Andrews he has served as Sophomore Sena tor, a member of the Points Committee, member of the Traffic Council, and on the staff of THE LANCE. Norwood is interested in a career in law after graduation. BONNIE L. LAYTON Bonnie Layton, a junior from Fayetteville, North Carolina, is an Elementary Education ma jor. Bonnie comes to us from Flora Macdonald and is at pres ent Chairman of the Campus Coffee Committee on the Stu dent Center Board. BONNIE
