PAGE FOUE THE LANCE APRIL 17, 1S62 Speaking Of Sports 1 Baxley and Bunnell Where’s our support? That is the big question in the Sportr Department and the baseball team are asking today. Why wont the students support them? We’ve got an exciting team who with a few breaks going their way would have won all but one of their games. Certainly they deserve much better support. Also there seems to be a defeatist attitude on the campus as regard to our intercollegiate teams. Everyone takes it for granted that we are going to lose every game we Pl^Y- But YOU don’t realize how good the team is until you see them play and most of you haven’t. This defeatist attitude is no fair to Coach Ollis and his Knights. They dont like it and it’s harder to play when you know everyone thinks you haven got a chance. So this attitude is no excuse and unfair. ^ Some of you claim you know nothing about baseoalL This excuse has been used by many especially the girls. What is wrong with learning something about it- It doesn t take a brain to learn. Soon you will find yourself catchmg the ittle things that means the difference between winners and losers. You will thrill to the good and great plays, and believe me the Knights make their share of them- They have got good defense pitching, and hitting seems to be shaping up now. The be.t way to learn is to go to the game. . Another excuse is lack of transportation. This excuse holds UD to a great extent with games away. But here at home its no excuse. We play at Legion Field and have bus transporta tion to and from the ball park just like we did during the basketball season. You can hop in the bus for tjie and see some great ball games and have a great time. Many of your friends have cars. Get a gang of your friends and go to the games. That is the best way to go! Man, the fun you can have together. We realize that some may have classes on the afternoon when we play, but not that many! Visiting teams have com mented on the lack of support which they think prevails at St Andrews. This type of reputation throws a bad hght on fat Andrews, its coaches, teams, athletic department; but most of all on the student body. No one wants that kind of a reputa- *^°’^'to appreciate how hard Coach Ollis works, you have^ to see him. He has put hours into this team trying to build a winner. He must be the hardest working coach on this cam pus The boys say they have yet to have a coach who works like he does. And the results are really showing now. It’s getting better each game. Now is the time for us to start doing our part and go to the games. Next Sat., April 21, we play High Point here at Legion Field. I hope that we can see a lot of you students there cheering on the Knights. It is about time we let them know that we are behind them all the way regardless of the outcome. Remember one thing: whole hearted support can do much for everyone, especially the team. They won’t lose in front of a crowd yelling for them. Come on out to the ball park! The Knights displayed one of their best offensive efforts of the season, but could not stop the leaks in their defensive ef forts. The Knights collected at least one hit per man as they unleashed a 17 hit attack against the Pembroke pitchers. On defense, the Knights were guilty of a few miscues that led to a 3 run Pembroke inning that broke a tie and allowed the visitors to win 10 to V. Gabe Crosby pitched a strong game for the Knights and Von Settle- myer, Knight catcher, had 3 hits in as many times at bat to lead the offensive fireworks. St. Andrews has completed its schedule with Pembroke for this year and has 10 games re maining. The Knights tennis team soundly defeated Atlantic Christian College 4-1. The Atlantic Christian Team arrived short one member; this accounting for there only being six matches. The doubles matches were not played due to inclement weather (the wind), and the hopelessness of the At lantic Christian cause by that time. Parks Garrison, the Knight’s number one man, was up against a superior player and lost 6-0, 6-0, and Larry Varner played a close match, winning 6-4, 6-4. The remainder of the matches were won easily by the Knights, as Johnny McLaurin won 6-3, 6-2, Bill Campbell, 6-1, 6-3, and Fred Thomas 6-1, 7-5. Coach Rufus Haclmey ex presses considerable optimism concerning the tennis team’s chances for a successful sea son, especially in their next match to be played against Ca rolina Wesleyan today.
