Deputation Team Represents SH The 1963-1964 St. Andrews De putation Team has recently been organized under the leadership of M.Jlinda Webster. This team will be traveling upon request to chu rches throughout the state to hold programs for youth groups. They have prepared programs such as “The Challenge of the Student Christian Vocation,” “Higher Education and the Church,” and “College Life.” Jack Castle, Walter Barefoot, Claude Andrews, Joyce Gattis, Helen McPhall, Peg Miller, Heath Rada, Jaynelle Goodnight, Nance Wall, Lou Ellen Lewis, Betsy Alston, M.iuna Gray, Susan Tata A1 Thomas Scottie Warren, and Mary Fisher are members of this team. S APO Competes In North State College Bowl St, Andrews will be one of ten colleges participating this year in the North State Student Gov ernment Association “College Bowl”, The idea of having a “college-bowl” among NSSGA members was discussed last year at the NSSGA spring conference, and rules were 4EMm up for such a contest *t this time. The purpose of the “college- bowl” contest is both to encour age academic competiton among the colleges of NSSGA and to familiarize college students with this organization. The colleges that St. Andrews will be compet ing against either directly or in directly are: Appalachian, Elon, Catawba, Pfeiffer, High Point, Guilford, Atlantic Christian, Western Carolina, and Lenoir Rhyne. Preceding the start of the”col- lege-bowl,” questions will be composed by professors from all the member schools of NSSGtA. A contest will consist of two twe nty-minute sessions with a short break between them, and the host school will select the mod erator. In every round but the final round, each set of com peting schools will meet two times in order to determine the winner of their set. Points are acquired by answering questions correctly, and at the end of a set the school with the highest number of accumulated points will be the winner. St. Andrews’ first oj^onent is Atlantic Christian College, A date for the contest has not been set as yet. Faculty Recital Joyce M. Bryant, assistant Pro fessor of flute and music educa tion, will present a flute recital Friday night, Oct. 11, at 8, in the Liberal Arts Auditorium. She will be accompanied by Lewis H. Hoy, assistant professor of piano. Doncert Series To Present Quintet The Dorian Quintet, one of tbe most acclaimed woodwind en sembles in this country and abroad, will be presented here as the first of the Concert- Lecture Series, Monday, October 21, at 8:00 in the National Guard Armory, Their program features not only standard but also con temporary works. The concert will open with Di vertimento in B Flat by Joseph Haydn. Following this will be Anton Reicha’s Quintet, Op.88 No. 1, Beethoven’s Quintet, Op. 71 in E Flat Major, and Paul Hindemith’s fUeine Kammer- muslk for Woodwind Quintet. The five members of the quin tet are: John Perras, flute; Char les Kuskin, oboe; William Lewis, clarinet; WilUam Brown, French horn, and Jane Taylor, Bassood. The group was organized in April, 1961, and made its New York de but in the following October. One year later the Dorians made a five week tour of Europe. TTjey participated in tJie International Contemporary Music Festival in Warsaw. See Q'iintet on page l4 John Evans To Speak On Campus Next Week Dr, John B, Evans, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church In Auburn, Ala,, will speak on this campus October 16th, 17th and 18th for the fall Services for Christian Growth, His sermons will be beard during the chapel period and also during three consecutive evening talks. Hoy Plans Tour For This Year Assistant Professor of Piano Lewis HoyWillbepresentedbySt. Andrews this year on a con cert tour. These recitals will cover the South and Midwest, Mr. Hoy’s opening recital will be here in the Liberal Arts Audi torium on November 1, Other recitals are: November 5 - Averett College, Virginia Noverber 7 - Ferrum College, Vrginia November 15-Marion High Sch ool, Marion, North Carolina March 10 - North Carolina Wes leyan College, Rocky Mount, North Carolina March 20 - St. Andrews April 1 - Klngstree, South Caro lina April 6 - Laurinburg High Sch ool, Laurinburg, North Carolina The last two weeks of March Mr. Hoy will be touring the Mid west with performances in Jam- esviUe, Wisconsin, Northfield, Wisconsin, and Decorah, Iowa. In April he has a proposed tour of the South with the famous cellist, Harold Cruthirds. The larger works featured in his recitals are: See Hoy on page 2 IVIenc Presents Opera Program As its first program of the year, the MENC presents Otis Lambert of Fayetteville in a program on opera. The program will be held on Oct. 15, at 6:30 in the Liberal Arts Auditorium. Mr, Lambert serves as the director of music at the High land Presbyterian Church where his wife also serves as organist. For interest it might be noted that Mr. Lambert studied under Radina Pazmore of this year’s conservatory fciculty. All stu dents and faculty members in terested are Invited to attend. The subject oi the morning talk is “Finding Real Freedom," and the overall theme for. the three evening sermons is “Doubt, Faith, and Obedience.” The in dividual subjects for the even ing sermons are: Wecfaiesda’y - “Dealing With Doubt” Thursday - “Just As I Am, I Come” Friday - “The Struggle of the Church to Be the Church” Dr. Evans is a native of Lau rinburg, and attended the public schools here. He was graduated from Woodbury Forest, Davidson College, and Union Theological Seminary, and his graduate work was taken at Yale and at New College, University of Edinburgh, Scotland. Before going to Auburn, Dr. Evans served for one year as the campus pastor at the Cita del. He was later Assistant Pro fessor of Bible and Religion at Davidson. His wife is the former Margaret Thornhill Wier, and they have five children, ^ Dr. Evans has said that he is looking forward to being at St. Andrews, and hopes to have the opportunity to visit with many of the students individually. YRC Elects Club Officers The St. Andrews College Young Republicans Club held their sec ond meeting i eptemijer 30 in the small dining rix>m. The main or der of business was the ratifi cation of the club constitution and the election of 1963-64 offi cers. The constitution as drawn up by the constitution comm: ttee WHS accepted unanimously.
