Presents Faculty Recital *THb Taming Of The Shrew’ To Commemorate Shakespeare The Highland Players are com memorating the tercentary an niversary of William Shakes peare with the presentation of his risque comedy, “The Tam ing of the Shrew,” March 3 - 7 in the Liberal Arts Auditorium. Flora Macdonald Campus Sold Papers were signed at Red Springs Wednesday aimed at the opening next September of a prep aratory school for girls on the old Flora Macdonald College campus. The new school will be named In honor of Dr. Charles Graves Vardell, founder and first presi dent of Flora Macdonald College. The first president of the new school wlU be Dr. William P. Matthews, a faculty member at High Point CoUege. Officials expect to go over the top in raising money needed for renovations and improve ments. Congratulations Congratulations to the Student Center Board on the success of their second poll concerning the Concert - Lecture Series. This time a total of 403 ques tionnaires were returned. The questionnaire was detailed and specific, and the information gained from this survey will de finitely be used in planning next year's Series. Prof. Carl von Kleist is direct or. David Fisher plays the role of Baptlsta Minola, John Marion portrays Vincentio, with David Porter as Gremio. As a comedy the play is a blend of witty farclal and charac ter elements. Disguise is one of the major devices used. A second plot sustains a comic effect from the characters of Petruchio and Kathrina. Assistant director is Lillian phillips. Costume designer is Prof. Arthur McDonald. John E. Williams, associate professor of organ, will give his faculty recital Sunday after noon, March 8, 1964, at 4 p.m. In the Sanctuary of the First Baptist Church, Laurlnburg, North Carolina. Professor Williams holds the Bachelor of Music degree from Oberlin College and the Con servatory of Music degree from the University of Michigan. He has studied in England at the Royal School of Church Music on a Fulbrlght scholarship, and on a Presbyterian Church U.S. Scholarship he studied with Oharles Letestu In Hamburg, Germany. He is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda and Phi Mu Alpha Sin- fonla. His interest in dramatics while In college led to his ac ceptance into Alpha Psi Omega, the National Honorary Dramatic Fraternity. In 1952, Mr. Williams was na tional finalist in the Young Or ganist Contest sponsored by the American Guild of Organists. Since then Mr. Williams has served in several capacities In the American Guild of Organists and has also served as music book reviewer for the Presby terian survey. During World War II, Mr. Williams served in the Intelli gence Division of SHAEF, Head- quarters of Major General Dwight D. Elsenhower. Mr. WlUlams was a recipient of the Bronze Star. The program will include: Cha- conne—Louis Couperin; Eleva^ tlon (Tierce en TalUe)—Fran cois Couperin; Variations on “Wehe, Wlndgen, Wehe”— Scheldt; Flute Solo—Arne;Kyrie, God the Father Everlasting— Bach; and Toccato In F Major— Bach. There will be a short inter mission followed by; Sonota I in F Minor—Mendelssohn; Ber- ceuse—Dupre; and Toccata Suite Op. 5—Durufle. Also on Wednesday, March 4, Professor Williams will play for an open meeting of the Bennetts- vllle (S.C.) Music Club at 4 p.m. at the First Methodist Church. The Publications Board is now accepting recommenda tions for editor of THE LANCE. The editor is appoint ed by the Board. Requirements for this position are minimum 3.0 grade average, one yearns prior service on THE LANCE staff, and be a rising Junior or Senior.
