OCTOBER 30, 1964 PAGE FOUR I Mecklenburg 1 Takes Football Championship The championship game of this seasons intramural football was played this past Tuesday, Octo ber 27. A tight defensive first half broke open in the final mom- ents of play, placing the Little Animals on top 19 to 6 over the Animals, The Little Animals broke ice on the opening kickoff with a pass play that went from Larry Taylor to Manley Turner to Rick Peters who in turn threw to Bill High who pitched to George Pistolas for the score. Both teams then settled down de fensively. At the half the score stood 6.0 in favor of the L. Animals, a lead which they never lost. When asked his opinion at half- time, Jim Moore said, “The opening kickoff was either luck or skill, I don’t know which. This is definitely a game of two strong defensive teams.” Larry Taylor responded in much the same manner. “De. fense will win this game. If we don’t win this one — its been a long season.” The second half resulted in haphazard play rather than a defensive pattern. Action was dominated by the L. Animals who first scored on a series pass from Taylor to Peters to Pistolas. Their last touchdown coming in the final few minutes of play, was thrown by Taylor to Ed McRae at left half who pitched back to Taylor. Taylor then passed to Barry Synder for the touchdown. With just more than a minute remaining. Rick Young snatched a hard low kickoff which placed the Animals on their own fifty yard line. On the fith down of their series Charley Hughes passed to Rick Young up the middle. Young then flipped the touchdown pass to Rick LeGrand which ended the game. “We were lucky to win; they played a good game,” was Taylor last comment. Jim Moore in affirmation said, “I said earlier that the team that beat us would win the championship, and they did.” Once again Larry Taylor is to be recognized for his out standing performance. Because of his aggresiveness both on offense and defense, Rick Young was selected the outstanding play er for the Animals in this cham pionship game. m Larry Taylor fires' a sidearm pass up the middle as Jim Moore and Randy Curtis put the Big Animal Rush on. Ed McRae and Manly Turner move the play. out in completion to Hairiers R>st 7-3 Recx>rd The St. Andrews Cross Country team has a fine record of wins in downing Atlantic Christian College (twice), Lynchburg, Carolina Weselyan, and Metho dist College. The team has lost only 3 matches; Davidson's hills proved too much and 2 upset victories by Methodist. Jim Smith, the “Running Mac hine” of the group has placed first in every meet except one. There is a big scramble for second honors. John Walker, Jim Eurby, Jommy Beason, and Wal ter Barefoot keep each other going by alternating the order of finish. The Knights have been hampered by injuries the last two weeks. Jim Eurby has come up with a “Marching Fracture” which will keep him out the rest of the season. The Knights have found a new place to practice also—the beach. The running in sand enables the boys to build up leg muscles. The trip to the beach last week end seems to have really helped their spirit too.
