PAGF 4 LANG£ march Appellate Boord Beniors I would like to take this oppor tunity to introduce myself to the student body as a candidate for the Student-Faculty A^wllate Board and to express my desire to rep resent the students. I am con cerned with the veil of secrecy which seems to hide the decisions of the board and I support the idea that the students should be pre sented with a brief resume of the court cases and decisions. Tliat the members of the board are elected necessitates that they represent and we can only know thsit the board reflects our opinions if we know its activities. I am convinced that, with the ex ception of a few cases in which the board deems secrecy wise, the activities of the board should be presented to the students in order that snowballing rumors, which are often detrimental to both the board members and the student involved, may be squelch ed, and in order that the students may be equipped with the know ledge to enable them to formulate constructive criticism rather than blind condemnation. I would like to see the student body informed of most ARiellate Board cases and decisions be cause I think such a procedure would increase the effectiveness of the board and enhance the student evaluation of the work be ing done. I would very much like to serve you and to represent you. Thank you, Carolyn Ebhardt I would like to ask you to con sider me as a candidate for the position of senior representative to the Student Faculty .Appellate Board. Please remember to vote on Monday, K&y McClanahan come familiar with all the facets of Student Center Board work. As Treasurer I was concerned with the financing of campus social ac tivities. Tliis year my major re sponsibility has been the con tracting of bands and orchestras for Board sponsored dances. I feel that I have proved my^lf capable of both performance and perserver^ce in my responsi bilities. I realize that, if elected, I will be chief co-fcrdinator of campus social activities. It is my belief that the social expression of the “college experience” can be just as meaningful as the academic expression. The student should be given the possibilities of fel lowship, activity, and relaxation, that is, a chance for expression outside of the classroom. As President of the Student Center Board I will direct my efforts to ward a presentation of a varied and meaningful social program. experience, insight, and what ability I possess will be used for you the student. My ears are for ever open to your suggestions; to gether we will make next year another “very good year” for the Student Center Board. I will ap preciate your vote very much. Ted Foy Secretary Junior Because the Student Center Board regulates many of our non- academic activities, it is a vital part of our system of govern ment. As secretary of this organiza tion, I feel that I can contribute to the effectiveness of the Board while responsibly serving my fellow students. With a sincere promise to serve you ably and conscientiously, I solicit your support. Betty Baldwin Christian CmrcII President I, Lee Accettullo, believe that I Sih qualified to serve as the Junior Representative to the Stu dent-Faculty Appellate Board. Work on the Senate and especially on the Honor Code Committee has helped me realize what the responsibility of a member of thp Appellate Board would be to this community, and I would willingly accept such a responsibility. Lee Accettullo The Student-Faculty. Appellate Board maintains the most im portant connection among stu dents, faculty, and administra tion in our judicial system. Hfere, student rights in regard to our constitution and policy are de termined. I am most interested in our student government and in becoming an active member as Junior Representative on the Ap pellate Board. In this capacity, I would try to maintain the prin ciples of our constitution with consideration of the rights of the individual students of our com munity, Your support will be ap preciated. Lynn Eller Center Board President I, Ted Foy, feel that I can bring to the Presidency of the Student Center Board ^^th the experience and the ability which the office demands. Having served as Treasurer of the Board my Sophomore year, and as Vice- President this year, I have be- One of the items in the plat form of one of the candidates for President of the Student As sociation is a "re-evaluation and re-vitalization of the SCC.” For those of us who are familiar enough with the Student Asso ciation to know what the SCC is, it is not surprising that this shoule be a part of a platform, not just for one candidate but for the entire Student Association next year. Many people have expressed a concern this year about the Christian Council, as well as about other organiza tions. Most of the complaints that 1 have heard have been only neg ative; »‘The Christian CouncU just hasn’t done anything,” There has been little or no recognition of tilings that have been accom plished and there have been no concrete suggestions as to what the Christian Council should be or should be dokju The Council is now working — to top it off — against a kind of “image” which has developed around the Council In recent years, and this image, wlille not necessarily right or wrong, has nevertheless discour aged others from wanting to or being willing to work with the Council, It Is no wonder that members of the SCC eventually become tired and discouraged and are tempted to let their work slide. The Christian Council is obviously in desperate need of RE-EVALUATION and RE- VITALIZATION. If my program can be called a platform at all at Ms point, these rather vague and general terms would be the basis. The Chri^an Council on a campus such as ours, with C&C at the core of our curriculum. must obviously play a role diff erent from that of a Christian Council on a campus where “re ligion’' is not one of the major e^nphases in the life of the school. We must make a serious effort to discover what our purpose should be, and then go to work to bring this purpose into action. It will do no good to philosophize all year and never translate our philosophizing into concrete act ions; nor would It do any good to dive headlong into action without some serious thought and re- evaluatlon of the Council’s purpose on this campus. One solution wotild possibly be to con centrate for the remainder of this year on this re-evaluation and planning for the coming year and then—hopefully— and with a little more enthusiasm, we might then be ready to begin our work for next year, never actually moving away from this framwork of self- evaluation. There are several concrete ideas which I would like to see developed for next year, in order to extend our program to more students. The SCC has a budget which would include enough money for several strong pro grams, if it is used. For the past two years, the SCC has left large amounts of money unused in their treasury, and this money could be spent for speakers in politi cal, scientific, religious, art, or other controversial fields. The SCC could sponsor one or two regular-length movies as well as one or two special films and pro grams. Special work will need to' go into plans for the Thanks giving and Christmas seasons, because of the difficulties in-, volved with the new calendar for these seasons. Other programs which will need continued plan ning and work are the Peace Corps, the Deputation Team, the Faculty - Home Seminars, the Tutoring Program under the Peace Corps, and so forth. The Christian Council has the potentiality to become one of the most vital forces on this campus. In filing for President of this Council, I have affirmed my will ingness to do what I can to see some of this potentiality actual ized, Your help and support will be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Scottie Warren made in this and otiier areas. 1 am confident that I am capable of leading an organization whose purpose is to co-ordinate all re ligious activities on campus, to make religion more vital to the students and to help students to formulate their own Ideas and be liefs tlurough general campus activities. Your support and vote for Carolyn Thomasson as president of the St, Andrews Christian Council will be greatly appreciat ed. Carolyn Thomasson WRA Presideit I, Carolyn Thomasson, am very interested in the St, Andrews Student Christian Council and the poteitlality which it has for be coming an integral part of the student government. Having served this year as an executive officer of the councU, I feel that I have the necessary experience to carry out the duties which the office of president of that organi zation requires. Because of my part on the council this year, I know what has been done as well as that which has not been done by the council, 1 would like to see some of the things which are just now being started by the council continued in “full swing” next year. These things Include the faculty-home semin ars which will enable interested students to visit In the faculty members’ homes to discuss cer tain topics which the students would like to know about such as interpretation of certain works of modern art for those who are not art majors, but who w^uld like to have a better understanding of the works. Or, perhaps a semin ar discussion on various'church vocations for those students who have thought about such a career but who are not aware of all the possibilities. I realize, as I am sure you do, that the council has made mistakes this year, but also that the council this year has made much progress in the area of the peace corps especially. I would like to see even more progress I, Dottle Du Bose, am a candi date for President of the Woman’s Recreation Association, If elected, I will also serve as President of the Intramural Sports Council. During my three years at St. Andrews, I have had experience on both councils. My sophomore year I was elected to the WRA council as a unit man ager from Concord Dorm and this year am serving as Vice-Presi dent of the organization and therefore a member of the In tramural Sports Council. Having received experience in this capa city, I feel that I know what will be expected of me if I am elected to the office that I am running for. I personally feel that many girls on campus do not realize what fun they can have playing in intramurals. There are some who feel that they do not know enough about the sport qr cannot play it well enough to partici pate. It is the responsibility of the WRA council to let these peo ple know that intramurals are for fun and emotional relaxation and not for merely showing some skill. One of the things that I would like to do to help those who want to play a sport but do not know how is to set up an Instruction period before each oncoming sport so that the girls may learn the rules and basic essentials involved in playing the game. I promise that if I am elected President of the Women’s Rec reation Association and hence of the Intramural SportsCouncU, I will strive my very hardest to promote a good and effective women’s Intramural program and a successful co-recreational program and in all cases strive for a good, clean, and enthus iastic competitive spirit on campus. careful planning and beina. lere^dandexcltedmysS sports, I can help everyonS have a chance to participate 5 sports with enthusiasm. Jackie staffo: Vjce-H?esiden: I, Betty Anne Ford, amac^ idate for the office of vi. President of the Women’s r! reatlonal Association, Ihaveai ively parUcipated in intramui sports all three years tha have been at St. Andrews and now serving asSecretary-Trea« urer of the Wjl.A.andabamer ber of the Intramural Sporl Council. If I am elected Vio President, I shall try to the be of my abilities to help promo the girl’s intramural sportspr gram on campus. Betty Ann For Secretary- Treasure This year I have served Dorm Representative for coi cord on the WRA, and therefo have an insight into the mecha ics of the organization and tl time involved. Having partic pated in every intramural act vity for the past two yearsj am interested in helping to forni a broader, more successful pn gram in the coming year. I feel I can best do this by serving as an executive officer on the WRaJ and hence serving on the Intri mural Sports Council. Peggie Clements Seniors To Hear Discussion Dottle DuBose I, Jackie Stafford, have been actively involved in intramurals for three years. I have seen many problems arise because we do not havie a gym. I believe that many of these problems can be avoided if the leaders make their plans early. I believe that the P.E. Department should know what the intramural leaders plan to do in order to have as few conflicts as possible. Intramural activities are sup posed to be fi^n and relaxing. This can only possible when the activity has been planned early enough and well enough so that it will not be discovered at the last, minute that the gym Is not available. I believe a greater effort should be made to Involve interested day students in the Intramural program, TMs could be done by better communication with them. Intramural sports give the students an opportunity to get exercise and to release tension. I feel that as president of Wo men’s Recreation Association, by Dr. Ralph Hester, Dean of Sh dents, has announced that plan are complete for graduatin seniors, and others who may I: Interested, to hear a discussic on life insurance, both as SECURITY and as a CAREEH Working with the Senior Clas President, Jerry Hurst, and wit various insurance company rep resentatives. Dr, Hester has ar ranged the meeting for 6;30 p.m. Wednesday, March 16, 1966, the Small Lounge of the Studen Center. The meeting, to con sume no more than one hour will provide time for questioni to some insurance representa' tives by interested students, Mr. E.L. “Jim” Horton, Char lotte District Manager for a ma jor insurance company, will the primary discussion leadei and he and one or two other rep resentatives will be available for individual conferences following the open meeting. Mr. Horton and his associates have made avail able for students to read before the meeting two rather informa tive pamphlets. One, “What Most People Don’t Know About Life Insurance,” is a reprint from THE READER’S DIGEST. Tlie other, “Your Life Insurance ajid How It Works” is a publication of the Institute of Life Insurance. Students may secure a copy of each without cost from the Office of the Dean of Students. Pointing out that insurance rep resents more than a valuable form of property, Mr, Ifcrton explains that many vocational] opportunities exist in the in surance industry.
