MARCH 18. 196^6 S»A. Elects Executive Officers K. Zwingle Poetry Winner Winners in two poetry con tests and a centennial presenta tion of a W. B. Yeats play, "liurgatory”, were the major Items in an evening oi poetry at St. Andrews Presbyterian Coll ege on Monday, March 14. Tlie event is one in a series of “Happenings” staged by the Freshman English department to add interest to academic studies. One poetry contest was limited to the 300 freshman students, the other was open to the public. More than 100 entries were submitted by poets ranging in age from eight years to grandfathers, and within a 50-mile radius geographically. First prize was awarded to Mrs. Barbara Whitley of Laurin- burg, second to Antoinette Adams of Fayetteville, and third to Charles E, Johnson. Jr. of Laurinburg. Honorable mention went to Joe Wheeler Drennan of Mullins, S. c., and Roger Steph ens of St. Andrews. Four children were recogniz ed for their work; Carol Wilson of Fort Bragg, and Elizabeth Tornow, Audrey Melinda Peele, and Luther M. Peele, m all of Laurinburg. Judges for the contests were ^am Ragan, executive editor of the Raleigh News and Observer; Edwin Gill, treasurer of North Carolina and Laurinburg native; and TTiad Stem, Jr., essayist and poet. The freshman English contest entries were screened by Alton Gibson, superintendent of the Laurinburg - Scotland County Schools, and Dr. W. D. The studehts and faculty of the School of Music are presenting Act two of FAUST by Gounod and Act two of THE MARRIAGE OF mishaps of the Count and Count ess Almaviva, which also involve the valet, Figaro, and the maid, Gusanna. The musical director for this production is Miss Ann Ratzell, instructor of voice. The stage Playmakers from Chapel Hill performed the Yeats play for the evening’s audience. They were David Gullette and Ted Simpson. J, First prize in the general con test was given by the Laurinburg Rotary Club, with second and third prizes ^Ing donated by the Junior Service League members. First prize in both contests was $15, with $10 for second and $5 for third places. Winning poems will be publish ed In the next issue. Highland Players Begin Faust I The Highland Player s next pro duction will be Professor Carl Geffert’s translation of Goethe’s FAUSTi Part 1. Professor Arthur McDonald will direct this production which will be presented May 4-7 in the L.A.A. Professor Geffert, St. Andrews Associate Professor of German, has newly translated Faust for this production. This translation, which Is in prose, makes this masterpiece of German dramatic literature more relevant and meaningful for twentieth century Americans. Tryouts for this production were held Tuesday, March 8, and the cast will be as follows: Larry Mathes - Faust, Bob Ber- Bercaw - Mephistophales, Sue Scarborough - Gretchen, Patsy Offutt - Martha, Lois Scoggins - Lieschen, Joe Mitchell - Wag ner, John Pfaff - Valentine, and the archangel David Hendricks - the student and the wUl-o- the-TTlsp, and Rob Frothlngham - the Lord with Kay McClanahan as the earth spirit. Cricket Harrison as the primary witch, and Sue Ethlenne as the evil spirit. To head the Student Association In the coming year Is Robert Anderson from Green ville, S. C. Bob, who will be a senior next year. Is a history and political science major. He has served St. Andrews in several positions - Vice President of the Freshnian Class of 1968, Treasurer of the Student Association for 1965- 1966, and Vice-President of the Radio Club. Also he has been a member ofthe varsity golf team and the freshman orientation committee. As Vice-President of the Stu dent Association and President of the Senate is Joe Overton of Arl ington, Virginia, Joe, who will be a junior has served St. Andrews on the Senate and as a member of the soccer team, Margaret Offterdlnger, a ris ing sophomore frpm Lynchburg, Virginia, will take over the off ice of Secretary of the Student Association, She was the co- editor of her high school news paper, President of Quill and Scroll, D.A,R. good citizen of the year, and this year has been a reporter for the Lance. The fourth executive officer In the Student Association is David Betts, a rising sophomore, from Atlanta, Georgia. David Is the freshman representative on the Student Life Committee, and a member of THE LANCE sports staff. Heading the Activities of the Student Center Board will be Ted Foy of Winston Salem. Ted, who Is a rising senior and an Eng lish major, has served as Treas urer and Vice President of the Student Center Board and has been on the Dean’s List, To aid Ted will be Betty Bald win from Clinton, S. C, Betty Is a Vardell Scholar and Is plan ning to major In Human Rela tions. Scottle Warren will preside over the Student Christian Coun cil in the coming year. Scottle, who Is from Macon, Georgia, plans to major in English. This year she served the.Student As sociation as Its secretary.
