FEBRUARY 10, 1967 THE LANCE PAGE 5 Knight Cagers Hit Cold Spell, Lose To W&L And Lynchburg St. Andrews cagers pulled ahead from a thirteen point deficit in the last minutes of the first half to lead the College of Charleston, 24-22, at the half. Behind the shooting of Brent Rhue, the Knights again came from behind in the se cond half to finally win, 63-47. Rhue, the game’s leading scorer, put in nine baskets from the floor and had a perfect night from the foul line, 8 for 8. The tall center matched his 26 points with 26 rebounds. The latter is a record for SA, snapping the record of 22 set by former star, Roger Dixon. Jim Saleeby hit for 14 points while Doyle Calloway had 11. The squad traveled to the home of the Washington and Lee Gene rals Friday, February 3, to be routed by their hosts. The Vir ginia team vanquished the Knights by a lopsided score of 77-26. It was a cold night from the floor. St. Andrews hit only 11 for 54 from the floor for 20% and 4 for 12 from the foul stripe for 33%, Rhue led the team in re bounds and points, 13 and 9 re spectively. After the loss, the Knights tra veled to Lynchburg to try to re peat the early semester 66-65 vic tory over the Hornets. Lynchburg built up a ten point lead before Coach Griffin’s boys began to hit. However, by the close of the first half, the Hornets had ballooned to a 50-24 lead. In the second half, SA matched baskets with Lynchburg, each team hitting for 18 buckets. Wayne Proffit, the Hornet’s leading scorer, was held to 4 points in the second half and 15 points for the game. Leading the Knights in scoring were Calloway with 19, Rhue with 18 and Butch Drawdy with 15. Rhue and Drawdy dominated SA re bounding with 16 and 15 respec tively. The team total for re bounds was 60. Following tonight’s home game with Asheville-Biltmore and the season final tomorrow night against Washington and Lee, the Knights will be idle until the D. I. A. C. Basketball Tourney at N. C. Wesleyan, Thurs. - Sat., Feb. 16-18. BUTCH DRAWDY takes jump shot in recent St. Andrews contest. KnightSports By Joe Junod GUY STARLLVG yanks down a rebound off the boards. 130 Mile Relay Run To DIAC Tourney From the earliest of time, man has used his legs for transporta tion. Even in today’s highly me chanized society, there still exists a small group of individuals who have a notion in their heads that running great distances is fun. There was the Phantom Finn, Paavo Nurmi; Roger Bannister, the first man to crack the four-minute mile; Glenn Cunningham, the Ame rican runner who bounced back from a childhood fire that seemed to have destroyed his legs; and the Canadian Indian, Tom Longboat, whose long distance running feats commanded the greatest honors around the turn of the centuxy. Sixty-five years after the Indian set all the running records, a group of men emerge from North Caro lina who plan to run from Laurin- burg to Rocky Mount, N. C., adis- tance of 150 miles. All members of the St. Andrews College community, the crew in cludes students: Ned Leslie, Lar ry Mathes, ScoU McCrea, Mike Mullinnix, Jim Query, John Royall, Jim Smith, John Walker, Brian Weger, and thirteen other boys. Five' brave and hearty faculty members also plan to make the long journey: John Dahl, art pro fessor; Andrew Long, math pro fessor; Ballou Skinner, physics instructor, Lester Whitley, biology teacher and Charles Johnson, En glish professor and an old hand at the running game. The event takes place on next Thursday, February 16, and will begin at 1:00 a.m. in front of the Student Center. The tentative schedule plans for a 6:30 a.m. arrival in Fayetteville. The next point of contact will be Dunn at 9:30 a.m. Following a 3:00 p.m. arrival in Wilson, the runners plan on reaching their destination, Rocky Mount, at 6:30 p.m. The group of harriers must ave rage 9 miles an hour or 13 minutes for each 2 mile jaunt. Each man As the Conference tournaments approach, I can see two St. Andrews teams in the winner’s circle. The wrestling team is still strong enough to beat their Wesleyan and Methodist opponents. The bowling team, under the watchful eye of Dr. McLean, should repeat last year’s high scoring performance at Charleston, South Carolina. * 5|c * s(c With some good recruiting on the part of Charles Johnson, Frank Grier and “Spanky” Hancock, the grapplers have managed to strengthen their squad which was weakened by the loss of Tom Teal, George Pistolas and “Yank” Albers. Jim Bouck, who wrestled three years in high school, has helped fill in the gap at the 152 weight class. He displayed a good knowledge of moves and technique in the recent match against Pembroke. Ed Minnich, who had no previous experience, has picked up the moves and holds very quickly. Look for this boy to turn out some fine per formances in future contests. Gary Ball was a pleasant surprise for the wrestling team. Although Ball has never competed before, his strength, agility and co-ordination may overshadow his inexperience. Captain Warren Maxon, Dean Leake, Rick Reynolds, Jan Bartlett and Frank Grier are my picks to capture the Dixie Conference individ ual titles. if Hf. if H/i I don’t think I’m being biased when Isay that the keglers will repeat last year’s performance as D.I.A.C. Conference champs. The record is tops in the league and the squad’s overall average is also number one. Ed Butterworth leads the league with a 189 average. John Burchill and Frank Ligon are also among the top five bowlers in the conference. Paul Dhyse of Methodist and BobWittschen of Charleston are the remaining bowlers in the top five. Congratulations to assistant basketball and soccer coach Benny Brockwell and Tillie Van Dyke on their recent engagement. The word is out that Coach Spencer Eoyd is engaged to a young lady from Atlanta, Georgia. will run a 2 mile leg and then pass the baton to the next runner. It is estimated that each man will run three legs or a total of about six miles. Jim Smith has stated four pur poses for this grueling human endeavor: (1) to create interest for the upcoming Basketball Tour nament at N. C. Wesleyan College. (2) To create support for St. Andrews in the tourney. (3) To further the interests of long dis tance running. (4) To create ex citement for the basketball players and runners themselves. A bus will carry the pep club and cheerleaders - all interested should drive up and support our school.
