PAGE FOUR THE LANCE Added Depth Important THURSDAY. SEPT. 19. 1968 Nine Lettermen To Open Season tjM - with the opening game less than a week away, the soccer team’s afternoon practice ses sions have taken on a new seriousness and Intensity, Coach Flackney has his squad divided into offensive and de fensive units, each with their own regimen and drills, work ing with passionate detail on the fine points of the game. At one goal, Coach McGee fires shot after shot at goalie Hannas, loosening Joints and steadying nerves. At the other goal, Al bers, Welch and St. John weave their way downfleld twenty times, perfecting passes and shots. It Is obvious that every one’s mind Is on the upcoming season, and with the material the Knights have this year lij’s going to be a good one. The squad shapes up well so far: the front line consists of Insides Albers and Welch, and a variety of wings. Returning from last year are Ralph Nes bitt and Randy Wellford, tut they will have plenty of help with newcomers Bert St. John, ■Mac Molas, and John Daniels. All are good ball handlers, and are quick. Welch and Albers are imcomparable working tte middle, and with the new scor ing potential on the wings tli> Knights can look forward to much Improved offense. THIKU Vl;AH MA.N Gray Clark will open next Tuesday’s game against trksine f ollege in Due West, S. C., at the halfback spot. Well Sports Fans . . . SCOTT McCKEA The Letterman’s Club has spent this week Initiating its newest memliers (in case you hadn't noticed), and apparently the new leadership of the club has made the once questionable practice of initiation a re latively enjoyable event. The tnltiees have mustered at the crack of dawn each morning to enjoy breakfast together, and close each day with a couple of hours of fun and games devised by the lettermen. The letter men are greeted cordially if not lovingly by their charges all day long, and the new aspirants to the club wear a special identify ing article of clothing at all times, proclaiming their sup port for athletics. Some of the games the initlees play Included kissing the Knight, stuffing the circfe, a scavenger hunt and countless Instances ofwalk-on- the-water. After a week of thus proving their loyalty and stamina, the initees will become full members of the club, and earn the right to inflict the same atrocities on the next batch of new letterwlnners. Tomorrow night the new club members will celebrate their survival with a party off cam pus, and be officially welcomed to the club. All in all, to quote president Jan Bartlett, “It’s been so successful I don’t know what to say”. RECENTLY NAMED CO-CAPTAINS for the soccer squad this season are Yank Albers (left) and Ken Pritchard. Thincladsmen Open Season: Acquire Two Female Managers The cross country team re cently acquired two managers of the female variety, the misses Sandra Webbere and Nancy Nicholson. The girls per petuate a tradition of sorts established here last year by one Sharon Webber, who man aged the varsity wrestling team all season and served as a con siderable morale booster. Sandra and Nancy perform countless managerial chores, including keeping times, tend ing the medical needs of the runners, rubbing dpwn sore calves, thighs, etc. Needless to say, the girls boost the squad’s morale considerably, and which team on campus needs it more. Tennis Starts There will be an organiza tional meeting Sunday night at 7 in the main lounge of the stu dent center for all students Interested In playing varsity tennis this year. We hope to be gin fall practice next week, and If you haven’t picked up a racket all summer, now is the time to get out and start loosening up. The first soccer game of the season is Sept. 24 at Ersklne, followed by a conference game the following Saturday (28th) at Wesleyan. .Make plans now to drive to Rocky Mount for Uiat game, since, as Coach Ilanckey points out. It’s only a 2 hour and 15 minute drive and well worth tiie effort to start the Knights oft right. The varsity soccer team has elected seniors Kenny Prit chard and Vank Alljers co- captains for the 1968 season. Toussalnt L'Ouverture was the martyred founder of the Haitian Republic. Cronly 276-0859 (Across from Courthouse) The Best In Barbering Angus Mclnnis Barber Shop South Main Street The nucleus of the halfback situation is basically unchanged from last season. Co-Captain Ken Pritchard will again per form at center half, with Gray Clark and Hamp Sewell doing the legwork on the outside. New to the team this year are Chris Johnson, Henry Dufek and Dave Van Pelt, all freshmen, and longtime SA athletes Terry Jay- work and Paul Szumelda. All the fullbacks are return ing and will also be helped out by several new men. It looks like Colby, Brewbaker and workhorses Al Thompson and Jim Snyder in the backfield, helped out by track stars Phil Blundell and Dave Rothwell. The defense will further be bolstered by Fred Olert, Jan Bartlett and Jim Womeldorf, and it appears likely that Craig Hannas will start at goalie. All in all, it would appear that SA has more man power this year than ever before in its history. Many of the freshmen will start, and Captain Albers should trade goals with Wolch all season long. If Hannas comes anywhere near his potential he will make All-American again, and it looks like a very stingy group in the backfield. Thehalfs are plentiful and strong, and the whole team is in top physical shape, or my name isn’t Coach McGee. It is going to be SA’s year, and Coach Hackney ex presses the team’s sentiments when he hopes for loyal and enthusiastic student support all season. I have a feeling they are going to deserve it. Intramural Football Opens October 9th Men’s intramurals are in full swing with volleyball leading the action, and ping pong slated to begin September 30. October 9 marks the start of the practice game and the sea son opener is the 14th. With a considerable influx of healthy freshmen, the MRA looks for ward to a great season and many acts of heroism on the fields.
