the lance THURSDAY, OCT^^^J Knights Lose Campbell Game In Overtime By Scott McCrea Sports Editor Two bad breaks gave SA Its second loss of the season Tues day as a strong Campbell team battled the Knights evenly to the final pun, only to win on a beautiful shot with seconds left In the last overtime period. It was a game that could have gone either way, and It happened to go Campbells’ way. Midway through the first quarter. Gray Clark arched a high comer shot towards the Campbell goal, and Yank Allwrs tipped it In for the Knights’ first and only score of the game. Campbell could not score for the first three quarters, but with ten seconds left in the third quarter, SA goalie CralgHannas came out for a loose ball in the peanlty area. As he came down, (see picture) he hit a Campbel’ player and the referee had nc choice but to call a foul on Hannas. Dave Ansler was given the penalty kick for Campbell, and he evened the score to l)e- gin the final quarter. With the sun getting lower and the temperature sinking, the de fense took over and the final period was scoreless. Bob Brewbaker played a magnificent game at fullback, sparking the defense to what was in theory another regular game shutout, excluding the penalty kick and the overtime score. Still, with only 40 seconds left in the second overtime period, Camp bell got a wing loose and only one SA fullback was deep enough to cover him, the rest playing well up in a last ditch effort to score. It was one on one with Hannas from about five yards, and Campbell’s Young slammed it home. The Knights fought back desperately and in fact almost scored in the final thirty seconds, but the gun sounded, leaving 11 Knights stunned and unbelieving. With last Friday’s 3-0 win over Methodist, the Knights now stand 8-2-1 for the season. In talking with Coach Hackney we learned that SA’s last loss on their home field was a tourna ment game withLynchburgNov. 4, 1966. Obviously the fact that SA’s next game is here against Lynchburg had nothing to do with that bit of information .... and although SA has now played 19 straight games on their home field without a loss, they have also compiled a record that is even more impressive, in a dif ferent sort of way. Seems that SA has played five games with Lynchburg in the last two or three years, and In only one of those games have the Knights scored against Lynchburg. They have been shutout in 4 oi't of ^ games. The last time we even scored against them was Oct. i, 1966. The challenge is obvious. SA needs to win this Saturday to go into il^e DIAC tournament seeded number one. They need to win just to prove to them selves they can even score on Lynchburg. And they need to win to assure themselves a spot in the NAIA playoffs. Alotls riding on this Saturday’s game then, and if you’ve been putting off coming to a game, the time has come today, baby. Come see the big Blue Machine put in their first goals in three years against the men from Lynch burg, because we know they can do It. Don’t we? w THIS WAS THE PLAY that set up Campbell’s tie breaking penalty kick at the end of the third quarter, as Hannas came out for a beautiful save but came down on two Campbell men. The referee called it a foul, and the resulting peanlty kick tied the game at 1-1, setting up the overtime periods and ultimately winning the game for Campbell. The Mauntain Streaks On Mighty Kings Mountain con tinued its string of victories with a 13-0 shutout of Meck lenburg yesterday, as fresh man Jeff Erickson hauled in two TD passes, and Rod the Bod Moore picked up an extra point for the winners. Scrappy Winston-Salem bag ged their first victory of the season with a tight 6-2 win over Orange. Keith Klger hurled a long pass to Jim Bagshaw for the TD, but it was a defensive battle all the way. Freshman Jeff Erickson adds a needed punch to the squad while sophomore co-ed Sandy Berg as astounded the “old regulars” with her consistency. Of recent weeks Llgon, whose sister Margaret Is also on the team, is finding the mark at a consistent 190 average. Erickson and Junod follow Ll gon, each tossing a regular 185. Ted Kingsbury, a new ad dition to the team, is being heavily counted on oy Coach Dave McLean to fill the gaps. The lanky senior is averaging about 170. The 34-6 record of lastyear’s squad is the finest ever posted in the short history of the DIAC and makes Dave McLean the most successful coach in SA history. . 895-6270 RICHMOND PLAZA SHOPPING CfNTER .
