Their repertoire ranges from
turned on Bach to the Associa
tion-type sound to the Beatles.
The Ensemble was the main
attraction at Midwinters at

deans a year for this purpose.
But it might be of Interest to
students to know that many
members of our faculty turn
down offers of this kind every
year because they prefer to stay
at St. Andrews rather than ac
cept positions elsewhere.
It Is safe to say, I am sure,
that our faculty next year, as
has been the case, for the past
five or six years, will be stron
ger than it is this year. As we
make new appointments, stu
dents will want to know about
them and I will try to provide
such information for the
“Lance”. Let me mention here
two new appointments in the
field of politics for next year.
These men will not only bring
needed strength to that area
but will have large responsi
bility for developing the new
program In the social and be
havioral sciences which we are
undertaking.
Dr. A. Guy Hope, Pro
fessor of Politics and Director
of the core program in politics,
business and economics. Dr.
Hope took an LL.B. degree at
the University of Virginia, an
M. A. at George Washington
University, and the Doctor of
Social Science In the Maxwell
School of Citizenship at Syra
cuse. University. He has also*
done graduate study on the Far
East, Japan and South Asia at
Princeton University and Stan
ford University. For twenty
years he was a foreign service
officer with the State Depart
ment, serving in Europe, Africa
and Far East and later In Wash
ington as director of the Near
Eastern and South Asian Re
gional Affairs office.
Upon his return to Syracuse
University he served as acting
director of the South Asia Pro
gram in 1964-65 and a member
of the South Asian Studies Com
mittee at that university for
three years. In 1967 he ac
cepted a position at Western
Kentucky University as Pro
fessor of Government and di
rector of South Aslan Studies,
and comes to St. Andrews from
this position. In addition to a
number of bulletins and reports
for the State Department, Dr.
Hope has published a book on
“The U. S. Role in Indian In
dependence” and has lectured
frequently in the Foreign Ser
vice Institute of the Department
of State. He will, of course,
make an Important contribution
to the South Asian program In
junior C&C, as well as to our
work in politics. Dr. Hope Is
married and has two daughters
who are now attending junior
college.
George L. Fouke, Assis
tant Professor of Politics. Mr.
Fouke holds the B. A. degree
from Lafayette College, the
M. A. from the University of
Pennsylvania, and is completing
work for the Ph.D. at the Uni
versity of Colorado this sum
mer. He also holds a certificate
from the Center for the Ad
vancement of Higher Education
for work done at the Unlver-
three years he has taught a
course on the Foundations of
Social Science in the Integrated
Studies program at the Uni
versity of Colorado. Both this
year and last year he received
an award for Exe)llence In
Teaching at Colorado.
We were all much Impressed,
not only by his competence and
insight but by his enthusiasm
and his approachto college edu
cation when he visited St. An
drews recently.
