Knight Eleven Slaughter Tusculum Nesbit Breaks Single Game Record; Edge Pfeiffer On Second Drill Team To Be Formed BY JUDI VICKNAIR A new organization is in tne process of making its debut on the St. Andrews campus. The name of the game is drill team and the object is to boost spirit and provide entertainment. Since it has been brought to our attention that many students do not know what a drill team is let us say that 1. Contrary to popular opinion- guns are not carried and 2. it is only open to girls. But drill team is a unified body of girls that have several things in common. These girls usually have big smiles and are sincerely friendly, they are concerned with doing something for the boys on the teams and the student body—they know how to hold their head up with pride and aren't afraid of getting cold. The girls on the drill team will practice several times weekly in order to perfect the routines they will perform. Then the showswillbepresented during the half-times at soccer and basketball games. These shows will consist of a com bination of marching and danc ing set to music. Variations on popular themes such as the use of pom-poms, tourches, and flasllghts etc. will be incor porated into these routines. They will be performed in uni forms displayingblue and white, the St. Andrew’s colors. This year's sponsor is a former St. Andrews student, Elliott Mac- Keithan Leake. Main St. Harriers Beat Methodist The Knight harriers com peted in their first seasonal meet Monday at Pembroke, and came away with a conference victory over Methodist although finishing second to the host Braves. Transfer Phil Cheney had the best time of the St. Andrews runners finishing the five mile course in 26:34. Howard Schae fer finished second for the Knights In a time of 28:02. The Knight participants all finished in times superior to their earlier time trial efforts. If the harriers can stay healthy, The St. Andrews soccer team Is off and winning this season with two consecutive victories over first Tusculum by a de cisive 11-1 margin and then a 2-1 come from behind decision over Pfeiffer College In Tues day’s away contest. The Tusculum game was only seconds old when one of the opposition’s halfbacks netted a shot past a fallen Craig Hannas and a confused Knight defense for an early 1-0 lead. The Knights quickly found themselves and went on to score 11 goals while giving up not a one the rest of the way. Knight wing Randy Wellford tied the game on a shot from in close early In the first quarter after taking a pass from forward Ralph Nesbit. Veteran forward John Dan iel put the Knights ahead to stay with a shot rifled into the upper left corner from about fifteen yards out shortly after Wellford’s score. Then It was time for the re turn of the Golden Caterpillar as Mr. Nesbit scored the first of his St. Andrews single game record total of five goals mid way through the first quarter giving the Knights a 3-1 edge. St. Andrews added three more in the second quarter as Nesbit tallied twice withfreshman wing Don Cooper scoring in between after an assist from Henry Freeman. The third quarter also be longed to the Knl^ts and Nes bit set the new S.A. scoring re gressive Knight attack. The fourth quarter was also all St. Andrews as Daniel netted his second goal of the game to give the Knights a 9-1 lead. Kentucky Southern transfer Don Griffiths scored the team’s fi nal two goals on a pair ot fine shots. Griffiths, playing center halfback, headed in the final goal beautifully on a cross from one of the wings. Coaches Hackney and McGee used nearly all their personnel and certainly It was a fine team victory. Offensively Nesbit, Cooper, Daniels, and Wellford were very Impressive. Center halfback Chris Johnson and later Don Griffiths along with veterans Thompson and Hannas led the stingy Knights defense. Tuesday’s victory over Pfeiffer was truly a defensive struggle. Neither team managed to score in the first half of the contest. Pfeiffer employed a special seven man defense Half Goals against the high scoring Knights. Knight goalie Craig Hannas made a fine save of a penalty kick in the first half which later proved vital to the S.A. win. All the scoring occurred in the third quarter as Pfeiffer tallied first on a goal similar to Tusculum’s only score on Saturday. Veteran forward Bob Welch tied the game for the Knights on an early third quarter goal. Then what proved to be the winning score came as a corner kick by wing Henry Freeman was headed In by forward John Daniel for his third goal of the young season and the Knight’s second victory. Yesterday the Knight booters traveled to Guilford for game three of the season.
