Booters Crush
Wesleyan 9-0 5
Battle Voorhees Today\
BY MIKE KEECH
The booters gained their sixth
triumph of the season here
Tuesday by ripping N. C. Wes
leyan 9-0 in a conference game.
After a scoreless first quar
ter the Knight attack came to
life with two second period
goals. Forward Bob Welch
broke the scoring Ice taking
a pass from ace wing Don
Cooper right in front of the
goal and kicking It by a Wes
leyan fullback attempting a des
peration save. Then in the clos
ing minute of the half Cooper
scored the Knights’ second goal
on a bounding shot to the ex
treme right corner of the Wes
leyan nets.
The Knights continued their
offensive exhbltlon in the third
quarter with four additional
goals. Welch and Cooper com
bined again for the victor’s third
goal of the contest early in the
period. Then Knigjit high scorer
Randy Wellford booted his
seventh goal of the season after
taking a corner kick from wing
David Mills, giving the Knights
a 4-0 advantage.
S. A.’s fifth goal proved to
be a significant one at least for
one Knight performer. Co-cap
tain and veteran defensive
standout, A1 Thompson had
never scored in a Knight uni
form. Thompson ended the
drought Tuesday by converting a
penalty kick after Welch was
tripped by a Wesleyan fullback.
Forward John Daniel ended the
third quarter scoring rifling a
shot from several yards out past
the Wesleyan goal tender. Mills
was credited with his second as-
slt of the day on a fine cross
to the waiting Daniel.
The Knights also dominated
fourth quarter action scoring
three more times. Welch opened
the final period offensive with
his third goal of the game on an
assist by Daniel.
Then It was rugged center
halfback Chris Johnson’s turn
as he ripped the Knights’ eighth
goal Into the right corner of the
Wesleyan nets. Once again
Cooper was responsible for the
assist. Thompson, not satisfied
with his first career goal,
added number two late in the
quarter and of course Mr. As-
slst-Cooper-set up the score
for the 9-0 victory.
Coach Rufus Hackney used all
his personnel In the contest as
Knl^t fans got their first look
at substitute goalie Mac John
son and other freshman per
formers. Special recognition
should go to Cooper with one
goal, and four assists, Welch
with three goals returning to his
old form, and Dann Griffiths
for another fine defensive per
formance at center fullback.
The Knl^ts also were vic
torious in Lynchburg last Fri
day, bringing home a 3-1 de
cision in that crucial conference
clash.
All the game’s scoring oc
curred In the first half. Well
ford got the Knights off to a
1-0 advantage as he headed in a
Cooper corner kick early in the
first quarter.
The Hornets tied the game on
a first quarter penalty kick.
The Knights again took the lead
as Welch scored from twelve
yards out on an assist by
Thompson. The game’s final
goal belonged to Cooper in the
second quarter as he headed in a
high arcing pass from Mills
giving the Knights a 3-1 lead,
which remained unchanged
throughout the scoreless sec
ond half.
It was a hard fought S. A.
victory and perhaps the Knights
finest game thus far. Today the
booters entertain Vorheesfrom
South Carolina in a previously
unscheduled match.
