THURSDAY, APRIL 23, 1970 THE LANCE PAGE THREE Mandrake Memorial ; Townes Van Zant Theology Must Meet Poverty (Continued from page 1) strategy of Mission which Is appropriate to the facts of our time. What the church now must comprehend Is that traditional missionary work is totally ir relevant today and that mis sionary action must be di rected towards the practical problems of society. Mr. Owen’s first suggestion is that “all” missionaries sent by the United States should be trained in development skills as well as in traditional theo logical and service skills. He also recognizes that “chur ches must organize themselves into a political lobby in support of foreign aid, a permanent and vigorous constituency. To do this, church members must be challenged in development problems to bring moral and theological dimensions to their work. In this light, the chur ches must address themselves specifically too controversial questions such as the issues regarding separatibn of church and state, the birthcontrolpro- blem and methods thereof-even if it questionsparticular church mythology such as Catholic dogma. Itbecomesessentlalun der the circumstances of des perate needs within the L a 11 n American community. A final point is that the Church must make no compro mise with virulent United States nationalism. For anything to happen, the church cannot as sociate Itself with a national interest which is restricted to its own preservation and which connects the existence of its political self with the existence of the Christian religion. The argument is that Christianity goes beyond nationalism to a Kingdom of God. In the question session fol lowing his speech, Mr. Owen responded to a question about the inevitability of revolution specifically in Latin America, but also in the entire Third World. He agreed that revolu tion is inevitable and essential for change under the circum stances of the Third World. But he specified the revolution could be either peaceful or violent depending on the receptiveness and willingness of the United States to act selflessly in as sisting these nations to over come their problems and to as sure indigenous groups a re sponsibility control over their own destinies. In connection with this, Mr. Owen criticized the Peace Corps for its recent attach ment with the national affairs of the United States. As the Peace Corps was originally conceived, it was independent of any poli tical affiliation. It has com promised its aims under the new leadership and has there fore lessened its legitimacy in international circles. What are those posters and bumber stickers around cam pus?
