APRIL 23,1975 Knights Split Pair With Hornets Northam And Erwin Lead Attack The Knights ran their re cord to 11-5 by beating Metho dist 7-2 and splitting a double- header with Lynchburg. After losing a heartbreaker in the first game 3-2, St. Andrews bounced back to capture the second, 9-5. The doubleheader concluded SA’s DIAC games, as the Knights finished 5-1, good for first place In the con ference. Lynchburg (4-1) has one conference game left with Methodist. Against Methodist, the Knights scored four quick runs in the first inning. They added single tallies in the second, fourth, and sixth frames. The Monarchs scored their two runs in the third and eighth Innings. John Everett, Ken Mehrling, and Irv Northam collected two hits a piece. Junior southpaw MarkKleber notched his second victory a- galnst one defeat. Kleber gave up eight hits, struck out five, walked four, and lowered his ERA to 2.16. The first game of the double- header with Lynchburg featured a tremendous pitching duel be tween SA’s Steve Litchford and Lynchburg’s Keith Scruggs. After five innings, Lynchburg had two hits and SA had one, with Lynchburg holding a 1-0 lead. In the top of the sixth, Eve rett walked, and Parrish was safe on an error. Mehrling bunted and Everett was thrown out at third. With runners on second and third, Northam promptly doubled, scoring both runners. Lynchburg retaliated with an unearned run in their half of the sixth. With the score deadlocked at 2-2, in the bottom of the seventh, Lynchburg’s right- fielder Don Massie delivered the crucial blow, a solo home run, to give the Hornets a 3-2 victory. Steve Litchford suffered his first loss but pitched brilliantly. He allowed only three hits, struck out three, and walked one. In the second game, Kemp Gregory picked up his second won, and the Knights blasted four pitchers for ten hits and nine runs. Riley Erwin smashed a grand slam home run, Irv Northam went three for three including a double good for three RBI’s and Ken Mehrling raised his team-leading RBI total to fifteen. Merhling hit a double and triple in four trips to the plate. In the tottom half of the fifth Inning with the score tied 3-3, the roof fell in for Lynch burg. Stuart Parrish ignited the fireworks with a walk, KM Takes Softball To Win Overall Race Kings Mountain has com pleted a clean sweep of the “Big Three” sports In intra mural competition for the 1969- ’70 season and thus insured themselves of the overall cham pionship trophy. The Mountain eers latest success came in the softball competition concluded this afternoon. The final standings in soft ball are typical of those in many ofthe activities completed this season. Meek finished se cond once again behind the vic torious KM team, with Winston Salem and Orange finishing a distant third and fourth res pectively. Senior Ken McGinnis was again instrumental In the Moun taineer championship as he pitched every game In the KM softball victory string. Mc Ginnis received valuable sup port from teammates Tersh Whitesides, Ray Killian, Gary Gredleln, Chris Johnson, David Sinclair, Butch Gaddy, Compy Groff, and John Daniel. Gred- lein and Killian anchored a strong infield while Whitesides did an excellent defensive job behind the plate. Daniel and Gaddy played well in the Moun taineer outfield. With the intramural season drawing to a close this re porter has selected Ken Mc Ginnis as the season’s MVP for his fine play and intra mural managing in leading the Mountaineers to the overall in tramural title. Wayne Wise walked and Glenn Hundertmark singled, loading the bases for Erwin. Riley smashed a towering drive over the leftfielder’s head to clear the bases and give the Knights a9-3 advantage. Lynch burg touched Gregory for two runs In the seventh, but the damage was already done for the Knights’ eleventh victory. Junior Irv Northam had a fine day at the plate against Lynchburg with two doubles and two singled in six trips and knocked in five runs. Northam has hit close to . 500 in the last four games and now owns a .318 average. Merhling con tinues to lead the team with a .339 average and fifteen RBI’s. Everett tops the team with 15 stolen bases, 22 runs scored, and crrles a .293 average. The Knights victory over Lynchburg ties last year’s school record of eleven wins, and they have six games re maining. On Friday, at home, undefeated Riley Erwin (4-0) will face the Pembroke Braves. Pembroke features two All- American candidates in short stop Ron Collins and center- flleder Preston Douglas. On Saturday at 2 p.m., the Knights host ACC with Litchford the probable starting pitcher, THE KNIGHTS STOLEN BASE LEADER, Jcim Everett, makes one of his successful steals in the SA victory over Methodist last Friday. Boyd And Jones Lead SA Golfers Over Pfeiffer Led by Joe Boyd’s one under par 71, the Knight llnksters de feated Pfeiffer and lost to Wil mington last Tuesday at Scotch Meadows. Mac Jones fired a 77 at the number two spot to win his points. Winning against Pfeiffer but losing to Wilming ton were Ralph Nesbit, Jim Harward, and Toby Vosburgh. Last Thursday the llnksters mauled USC at Conway 14-1/2- 3-1/2 behind a 76 by Joe Boyd and 79’s by Mac Jones and Ralph Nesbit. Toby Vosburgh and Jeff Saut also contributed victories at the rugged Quail Creek Course in Myrtle Beach, This same course will he the sight of the District Tourna ment in three weeks.
