PAGE FOUR THE LANCE SA Downs Lynchburg 2-1 For DIAC Title SA beat Methodist 1-0 wtille Lynchburg smashed Virginia Wesleyan 6-0 to set the stage for the anxiously-awaited con ference championship pitting two of the South’s finest small college soccer teams in the finals. The Knights, after a some what reserved performance a- galnst Methodist, came up with their best performance of the season Saturday against Lynch burg. According to Steve Brown, sophomore forward, "We knew from the time we saw Lynch burg play Va. Wesleyan Friday that we could beat them. We were all very tense and ex cited Saturday morning, but also very confident. We were ex cited because we had never beaten Lynchburg in the con ference tourney since most of use had been playing for S. A. nor had we scored on them. Lynchburg had been having a very good season with 11 shut outs to their credit. We were determined to beat them.” When the game started Lynchburg came on very strong, hoping to score quickly. They did not score until the third Quarter. Chuck Collins, left wing, scored from 5 yards out 00 a beautiful unassisted shot. Brown: ' ‘Surprisingly, we did n’t quit. We Just got that much madder. While the home crowd gave us beautiful support, Don Cooper scored the tying goal late in the fourth quarter on an assist from Randy Well- ford. ” The tie forced SA into two five-minute overtimes. There were no goals scored in the first overtime. With 1:50 left In the second overtime, Well- Hoopsters Open Against Lander On November 21, the Knights host Lander as theyopen defense of their DIAC title crown. Gra duation took All-District guard John Turner and MPV pivot man Brent Rhue, but a strong nucleus of eight veterans re turn combined with a promising freshman crop. Again, SA should be a prime contenderfor the conference championship. Veterans Include seniors Tonv Fernandez (6’3” center), Gary Gredlein (5’10” guard), Craig Hannas (6’4” forward), junior Gary Linn (6’2” guard), and sophomores Ven Johnson (6’5” forward), Richie Rob inson (5’8” guard), and MUes Weaver (6’1” guard). Freshmen Hudson Rogers (6’ forward- guard), Jim Haddlx(5’7” guard) and Bruce Taylor (6’3'> for ward), round out the Knight squad. Junior veteran Steve Massengil (6’5” forward), pre sently hampered to a broken wrist, will return in January. Also expected to join the team later is senior veteran guard Joe Long. The SA defense was charac terized by tough and aggres sive play which proved more than sufficient during the en tire game. Sailor fullback Rick Mason was a defensive stand out as was sophomore John Rhoderlck. Rhoderick, playing with an injured right foot, turn ed in an amazing performance. The Knight offense was a model of speed and cool calcula tion. Cooper, John Daniel, and Wellford all made several clutch plays. Eric Wagner, Lynchburg’s All-American full-back, proved to be no match tor our offense, Dave Mills and Steve Brown both turned In scrappy performances, but seemed to be hampered by the same Jinx that plagued the whole team most of both days--they couldn’t get the ball into the nets. Again Steve Brown: "If we were asked to name the key to victory--it would be two words--aggresslveness and de termination. The crowd would n’t let us lose and we wouldn’t give them a loss.” Tuesday SA’s hopes for an Area 5 playoff berth ended. In the mud and rain at Campbell, the offense-minded Camels overwhelmed the Knights 7-3. Goalie Craig Hannas convert ed two penalty kicks and Don Cooper headed one in for the third goal. Craig Hannas demonstrates these In a 2-1 win over nemesis Lynchburg tor the DIAC championship, All-Sfors Rout UNC 41-7 Slippery quarterback Stuart Parrish led the offensive fire works hurling three touch downs, five extra points, and running for another TD while defensive safety Ray Killian collected four interceptions as the SA All-Stars massacred Haycock dorm, UNC’s top in tramural football 41-7 in the an nual classic. UNC finally scored after a three year drought but the Knights racked up an Im pressive win. Our All-Stars played two well balanced halls as evidenced as 20 and 21 points respectively in the lirst and second halves. Mecklenburg’s Dorman Faw- ley gave the Knights an added offensive punch as he threw for two touchdowns. Congratula tions to all members of the All- Stars. A fine group of All-Stars will return next year in hopes of continuing our skein.
