THURSDAY. SEPT. 2. 1971 THE LANCE PAGE THREE Threatened Cost Hike To Wheelies Defeated BY HUNTER WATSON AND KAREN KENNEDY During the summer sessions at St. Andrews a situation a- rose which was of great signi- fiance to the wheel-chair stu dents. These students were no tified late in the summer that an additional $600 fee would be added to their regularly yearly cost. The fee was to cover main tenance of the bus, doctor fees, and rehabilitation personnel (physical therapist). The hope of the school was that this fee would be paid by the area re habilitation services at each student involved. However, most of these services had al ready set their budgets for the year, without any allowance for this increase. Therefore this cost would have fallen to the in dividual student and his parents. The students were not notified of this action early enougji to al low them time to transfer to another school if they could not absorb the extra financial bur den. Thus, some may have been forced into the only jther alter native of dr(^ping oat. For most of the students, however, the money was not the most important factor. Of greater significance was the fact that the wheelchair students were singled out to pay this fee. They felt that since they were not the only ones to use these services, it was unfair that they should be the only ones to pay this fee. This was GO BACK BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE Administrative Musical Chairs Two changes in the adminis trative staff at St. Andrews Presbyterian College became effective this week with the ap pointment of Robert L, Chaiken as Director ofthe College Union and the naming of Mrs. Louise F. VlUarosa to succeed Chai ken as Controller in the Col lege’s business office. Chaiken moves to his new post to suc ceed James B. 0111s, who has been granted a year’s leave of absence. In his new post, Chaiken, a 1966 graduate of St. Andrews who joined the business office staff in 1968, will be in charge of the calendar of events held at the college and work with the Union board in its pro gram of activities and enter tainment. Mrs. Villarosa, a native of Fayetteville, previously served In the accounting office of Mis sissippi Industries for the Blind and with the San Joaquin Sav ings and Loan Association in Stockton, California. She Is a mother of three children, the youngest of whom will be a freshman at St. Andrews this fan, Mrs. VUlarosa's husband was killed in action In Vietnam in 1968 while serving with the Special Forces. He was post humously awarded the Distin guished Service Cross. Ollis is taking leave after ten years as a member of the physical education faculty ^d coach until becoming Director of the Union last year. Active in church and civic affairs at local and state levels, Ollis two years ago was elected president of North Carolina Jaycees and during the past year has been a national vice- president of the United States Jaycees. in fact, a type of discrimina tion in that they were being set off from the other students. They felt that this action label ed them as a liability to the school, rather than an asset. A group of wheelchair stu dents met with Dr. Davis to discuss the reasons for this fee and to express their views that it was disciminatory. Dr. Davis then met with Dr. Hart and informed him of the op position of this action. Several students also met with Dr. Hart to discuss the issue. The out come was the dismissal of the $600 fee, with the condition that the physical therapist was also dropped. Since most of the stu dents did not feel the need of a physical therapist on cam pus, this solution seemed sat isfactory. Detamble To Secure Books The lobby of DeT amble Li brary underwent changes this summer. The circulation desk has been re-located along the right hand wall. This move was necessitated by a record num ber of book thefts last year to talling 1481. The new procedure for leaving the library requires stopping at the desk to have all books looked at to see if they are library books and to Insure they are properly checked out. Library hours for fall semes ter are Monday through Thurs day, 8:30 a.m. to 5;00 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.; Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5;00 p.m., and Sunday 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. The library will be closed on Sa turday.
