ppgnAY. APRIL 27, 1972 petition Being Passed For Birth Control THE LANCE jeai B: Ci BY GLENDA BUCK in recent weeks a number ol Ints on campus have been ■. ! health facilities at St. An- The petition deals with ?! issues. The first is a re- for faculties to give pap Tetrs and pelvic examinations 5the health center to women Adents. The second concerns S possible avaUability of birth irol devices, i.e., birth con- S pUls, intrauterine divices, and condoms, through the health services here. (The reasons stated in the net It ion supporting the first ism are: “D Pelvic examina- itons are a necessary part of lhalth services to women, 2) 7pap smear is recommended for college age women at least vearly for early detection of ■mcer- and 3) examinations lould 'be available to students -cause of the high incidence of venereal disease.’ The reasons given in favor of birth control devices being iiade available on campus are: ^1) a college which provides Ixtension abortion counseling, yet ignores other forms of birth control promotes the oting Planned ^For Tomorrow (Continued from page 1) .udent associatior., . (The Senate, however, voted iist night not to appoint Mr. Smith to the position vacated by Mr. Gibbs, by a 5-4 vote. In a telephone Interview, Nancy Coyle, Vice-President of Wilmington dormitory and »e of the Senators who voted gainst Mr. Smith’s appoint- [ment stated she felt Mr. Smith iild have run for an elected |)sition this year and then, nee he is presently a sohpo- ^ore, for Vice-President of the student association next ypar. jlShe also stated such action lould have been unfair to those her students in a similar posi- on to Mr. Smith’s, who lacked position they could be ap- |3inted to, thereby fulfilling j^eir qualifications. j At this point the Elections oard retains a quorum even nth the resignation of three ^embers and balloting is sche med for Friday with run-offs [on Monday, use of abortions as a means of birth control; and 2) the student body of this school has come out very strongly in the past in favor of providing birth con trol devices on campus (the lowest percent agreed to this, as shown in two surveys, was 69%, the highest 82%).»> This petition will be pre sented to Student Life Com mittee to be discussed and sent with a recommendation for ac tion to President Hart. Any questions concerning this petition may be addressed to Glenda Buck, Joanne Foil, Dianne Hogge, or Mary Abell. Candidate Bender^s Plan Includes Closer Student-Facuity Relations page three Historian Here Professor Larry Addington, a military historian, is on campus today and will address a din ner meeting in the President’s Dining Room beginning at 5; 30 p.m. He is currently Associate Professor of History at the Citadel in Charleston, S.C. His topic will be “The Historian and the Study of War.” Professor Addington did his graduate work at Duke Uni versity where he studied under Theodore Ropp, who is a well known historian of war. He has published numerous articles on military affairs and has recent ly published “Blitzkrieg Era and the German General Staff, 186501941”, a book on blitz krieg warfare. (Continued from page 1) and the manner where and when elections are to be held. I would favor specific additions to the constitution outlining the pre cise qualifications for all of ficers so there will be no ques tions asked. In connection with elections, this year’s ex periences should make us rea lize the need for some speci fications in that section of the constitution, I would support changes which would give con crete dates by which elections should be held. This year, the focus of com plaints and demands from stu dents has shifted from the re sidential to the academic side of the campus. There are three areas to which I would devote my energies. The first one is the concept of pass/fail. I believe that pass/fail can work in cer tain situations. I favor a pass/ fail option for Guided Indepen dent Studies. I feel that a GIS is often hard to evaluate with a letter grade. The second place where pass/ fail is a possibility is in P. E. I have discussed the pass/fail with all faculty members of the P. E. depart ment and realize that there are some problems. But I think that students should be made aware of the option and its disadvan tages, and should be given the opportunity to express some de sire in that direction. Infurther connection with P. E. I feel that P. E. requirements should re main but that they should not be graded and averaged with a student’s overall GPR. I would BOB’S JEWEL SHOP WEDDING RINGS ALL YOUR JEWELRY NEEDS JUST A FEW MINUTES AWAY College Ploio support a move to also make this an option of the student, A se cond academic area where I would direct attention is in STMS, In my work with the Long Range Planning Committee in that course, I believe that pressure could be exerted to end the required two semesters of STMS, and require only one semester with the second se mester taken either in STMS, introductory biology, or intro ductory chemistry. All of the above may appear to be a purely academic platform and in part, it is, I believe that we have accomplished our ends on the social side of the cam pus, i. e. no hours for women, open visitation, on-premise beer at parties, and no hassle on drinking, I feel that the idea or dorm autonomy is good If handled properly by the Indi vidual dorms, but I also feel Bloodmobile Due fere Tomorrow I Ms. Laurie Ewart, a jvmior, nounced that the Blood Mobile J k scheduled to visit here on Brlday, April 28 between 11:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. A goal of ■00 pints has been set for the S. A. campus. Anyone between the ages of ^ and 65 may donate blood ^ovided their blood pressure, pmperature, pluse, weight and emigiobln are determined sat- ifactory by registered nurses Ner the supervision of a phy- [Ician. Those who donate blood may |ecelve all the blood they need ^rlng the next 12 months for ^ee. ^ The dorm that donates the ^ost blood wUl win a keg of “eer. Yes, we take pride in ^ presenting the world ^ renowned -) Jewelry from Norway. » Hand applied enamel sterling ^ Pewter bracelets and pendants ^ Ideal gifts for Mother's Day g and graduation j that it is a problem for the in dividual dorms to handle and that Student Government should keep its nose out of a dorm’s affairs. I would favor some con crete changes in the policy on search and seizure of rooms, specifically, I would work to see that a search warrant must be presented in all cases ex cept on routine health inspec tions. This is only a brief state ment of my overall position. I feel that my previous ex perience in office and my in terests in all the above qualifies me for the office of Student Gov ernment President. The office requires someone who can and will get things done and some one who will work for the stu dents. I pledge to do this. I would appreciate your vote in Friday’s election.
