Knights Record 3rd DIAC Win;
Next Game At UNC-G Saturday
18, and 19.
It was Simmons’ first race
and came on the heels of a
week’s practice.
Monday Lynchburg took the
first three places, added
seventh and tenth, and beat
Christopher Newport, newest
Dixie Conference member, 23-
32.
St. Andrews was third at 95,
followed by Methodist with 107
and Greensboro College at 119.
Methodist’s two best runners
were eleventh and sixteenth
across, but Coach Floyd Black
well’s Kni^ts were bunched at
17, 18, 19, 20 and 25. Banning
Ingram again paced his team
mates, followed in order by
I Andrews, Von Unwerth, Jon
McKechnie, and Simmons.
BY MR. FOWLER DUGGER
Has St. Andrews adopted the
practice of some big-time foot
ball schools In turning to the
computer for an analysis of
game strategy? Or has Coach
Rob Kinne really put together
the ultimate Blue Machine?
Statistically-minded fans of
the Knight soccer team couldn’t
be blamed for asking such ques
tions after St. Andrews turned
back the Bishops of North Caro
lina Wesleyan here Tuesday
afternoon by a 3-0 score. That
was the third time the Knights
have faced Dixie Conference
competition thus far this season
and the third time they have
kicked their way to a 3-0 win,
Saturday afternoon at Greens
boro the Knights go after their
fourth DIAC win against UNC-G.
The 3-0 win over N. C.
Wesleyan came close on the
heels of a 3-0 win over Vir
ginia Wesleyan here Saturday.
Earlier the Knights had dropped
Methodist 3-0 to open the Dixie
Conference part of their season.
Saturday the Knights spent 30
minutes getting the range on the
visitors from Norfolk, Va, be
fore Prem Thoonkapballn
passed to John Catmur, cen
tered well out from the Vir
ginia Wesleyan goal. Catmur
kicked true past the Blue Mar
lin defense and goalie for a 1-0
lead. A minute and a half later
the Knights were back again.
This time Bob Latshaw fed the
ball across the front of the goal
to Thoonkapballn lined it into
the upper right corner.
With five minutes left in the
first half Senior Co-captain Don
Cooper scored, executing a pic-
ture-book shot. Catmur lofted a
long kick from the left wing.
Cooper, breaking to the goal
from the ri^t, caught the ball
Im mid-air with a leaping kick
and blasted it into the right
corner from about 10 yards out,
Kinne played all but two in
jured players before the second
half was over, developing depth
as a hedge against another rash
of injuries that slowed the team
just before the season’s only
loss, to Campbell. The reserves
played creditable ball despite
their failure to get anything on
the scoreboard. They stifled
most of the Blue Marlin attack
until late in the game and then
Jay Eipper, taking over for
John Bush at goalie, kept the
shutout intact.
A third 3-0 game on Tuesday
against N. C. Wesleyan was no
reflection of the Kni^ts’ do
mination of the offense. They
fired 31 shots against five by
the Bishops who seemed con
tent to concentrate on defense.
In many ways it was a frus
trating afternoon for St. An
drews. Passing and ball con
trol was generally good but
time after time players kicked
the ball just over the top or
just wide of the goal, or giving
credit where due, the Bishop
goalie positioned himself to
gather up the shot.
With 12:28 left in the first
half Catmur passed into the cen
ter to Thoonkapballn, When
Prem’s shot was blocked but not
picked up, Catmur, following
the play, lined the ball into the
goal for a 1-0 lead.
After 30 minutes of the second
half when Catmur's goal looked
bigger and bigger, Bob Lat
shaw took a good pass from
Thoonkapballn and drove home
a score from six or seven yards
out. Then with 3:26 left Cat
mur turned the left flank, eluded
three defenders, and at the last
moment passed to Thoonkapba-
lin at dead center. Prem was on
target for the final 3-0 mar
gin.
Next week the Kni^ts play
their final two home games.
Tuesday they’ll try to avenge a
3-0 loss to Davidson and Satur
day face Lynchburg for the
Dixie Conference title.
