Mr. Fowler Dugger UNC-W Shocks Knights After rallying twice to tie the game in the second half, St. Andrews’ soccer Knights succumbed to the UNC- Wilmington Seahawks here yesterday^ UNC-W scored on a long, curving shot with just 7:55 remaining in the game to destroy the Knights’ chances for a tie or win, and in the process may have knocked the SA team from its traditional berth in the district playoffs. UNC-W got on the scoreboard first with 14:50 left in the first half when Kevin Ritlinger took a pass from Dave Wychel and booted a high centering pass from the right sideline, about 35 yards from the goal. Knights’ goalkeeper John Bush misjudged the ball, and it sailed over his head into the goal. SA threatened several times in the early minutes of the second half, but couldn’t put the ball into the net. With less than 20 minutes remaining in the game, Richard Rhoderick, the Blue’s right wing, placed a perfect corner kick in front of the Seahawk goal. Bob Lat- shaw headed it in from about ten feet. The Knights had several more opportunities right after the goal, as they pressed hard toward the UNC-W net. The Seahawk defense met the challenge, however, and two long passes brought the ball .quickly upfield. Bush went to one side of the goal to make a save and was knocked down. The SA defense failed to clear the loose ball and Dave Wychel drilled it into the open net. Again SA came back, with the Rhoderick-Latshaw com bo accounting for another score. Only nine minutes remained when Rhoderick centered and indirect free kick. Latshaw adeptly used his head to knock the ball into the net. Only a minute after Lat- shaw’s second goal, the Hawks put the clinching goal in the net. Solomon Bitton bore in on Bush in a one-on-one situation. Bush came out about 15 yards, and Bitton hooked the ball around him beautifully for the score. The loss leaves SA with the distressing prospect of having to beat Campbell to assure themselves a place in the district playoffs. Last weekend the Knighis took a two day road trip to N.C. Wesleyan and Virginia Wesleyan, and returned with a pair of shutout wins. They won at Rocky Mount Friday by a 2- 0 count, scoring two quick goals midway through the fir st half and completely dominating the game thereaf ter. Cat- mur scored the opening goal with only nine minutes gone. Thoonkapbalin took the ball downfield, where it ounced off a fullback’s leg, then off Cat- mur’s leg into the goal. With 12 minutes left in the half, Noorani lofted a centering pass slightly over Latshaw’s head. Latshaw leapt and headed the ball in. The third Knight goal came with 19:00 remaining in the game. Mike Dunn drew the goalie out, then passed low to Catmur . John dove at the ball, and caught it squarely on the head to register his seventh goal of the season. Runners Win In Greensboro last Satur day, Knight harriers broke in to the win column, crushing Greensboro College 17-40. This, coupled with a 15-48 loss to Campbell’s powerful Camels, left SA at 1-3 for the campaign. Jacob Houge again paced the charge of the Knight brigade, crossing the finish line in 31:00. He finished sixth over all. Banning Ingram In 9th place clocked 31:43. Joe Ro berts ran 32:44, while Jeff Ward did 34:11 as SA put these four men ahead of Greens boro’s first finisher. Bill Fra- gaszy and A1 Leath also com pleted the trek. However, Campbell proved too strong for Oie Knights, garnering the first five places aided by Dan ny Merritt’s winning time of 27:57. SA cancelled participation at Methodist Monday as only four runners showed up to make the trip. The next sche duled meet is Thursday at Newport News with conferen ce rivals Christopher Newport and Virginia Wesleyan.
