PAGE FOUR Thursday, September 4,1975 thelanc New Coach: We’re Going To Win Soccer Picture Uncertain “New York has got Pele, but we’ve got Dean Betts.” That’s the kind of reaction fonner Millford, Delaware resident M. Dean Betts has provoked in his few weeks on the physical education staff of St. Andrews. A 1965 graduate of Millford High School who won statewide recognition for his sports achievements, the 28 year old Betts comes to the four year liberal arts school from East Carolina Univer sity, where he recently earned his MA in physical education. While there, he also conducted a weekly exercise segment on the “Carolina Today” television show. At St. Andrews, Betts will divide his time between coaching the varsity soccer team and directing the school’s adaptive physical education program. On the soccer front, he sees his challenge as one of “rebuilding” the Knights to rival the squad of a few years ago that rose to second in the nation among small eolleges and fielded three All- Americans. Calling his current group “inex perienced,” Betts noted that none are seniors and many are underclassmen; giving him “a good base to build on” for several years. St. Andrews’ President, A. P. Perkinson, Jr., calls Betts “an intense young man, devoted to his work.” Betts himself says, “I’m here to stay. Athletes need to know that for their own stability in developing a sport, as well as for the continuity of the program.” Summing up his strategy for the coming season, Betts says, “we’re going to learn to play as a unit and we’re going to win. That’s it.” Betts describes his duties as Adaptive P. E. Director as that of “tailoring each han dicapped student’s abilities to sports and athletic programs offered by St. Andrews. We’re known as the best school on the east coast in this field. I’m looking forward to working here. St. Andrews is a unique place.” CAROLINA WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL CONFERENCE 1975-76 ST. The team needs the support of Ihe whole St. Andrews com munity to getmovingand will undoubtedly bring more than its share of excitement to the SA campus. WE'VE MOVED! PHILLIP’S MUSIC MART IS NOW LOCATED AT 1310 S. MAIN ST. BETWEEN COUGHENOUR'S FURNITURE AND McDONALDS OPEN: 9:00 A.M.-6:00 P.M. MONDAY - WED. 9:00 a.M.-8:00 P.M. THURS.-SAT. Now A Radio Shack Dealer! The 1975 St. Andrews soccer team opens its new season September 10 at Pfeiffer Collie. This year’s team is under the leadership of Coach Dean Betts. Coach Betts, a native of Milfa-d Delaware, received his Master’s degree from East Carolina Univer sity. .^Bd;ts is a youthful 28 years old and has hi^ ex pectations for the n)coming season. The .“greatest ex pectations” will not materialize however without hard work and dedication; Coach Betts demands both. This year’s team is an ex tremely young but energetic unit. There are no seniors on the roster and relatively few returning lettermen. “At tacker” Mike Dunn out of Skillman, N.J. and defen- seman Tim Griggs from Har- tsville, S.C. both Juniors, of fer varsity experiaice. Both started la^ year, eat nails for breakfast and are excellent team players. Sophomore Mike McOwen hails from Winter Park, Florida and has looked strong as a front line attacker. Two excellent ad ditions to this years squad are freshmman &ott Brouthers of Cleveland, Ohio and tran sfer Karl Jennings frm Har- tsville, S.C. Brouthers, afullback, looks very im pressive and should move right into the starting lineiq). Jennings, a goalie, {dayed winter soccer wiUi the St. An drews Soccer Qub and is a proven talent. These five players irovide a good base Ml whidi to build a powerful dub. Promising players in clude former intramural stan dout Richard Massey, Casey Middleditdi, a spot starter from last years squad, junior Rowe Campbell and sophomore Bill Owens. Fresh man hopefuls include Kim Rowe, Lewis Barnes, Tom Stoeker and George Calhoon This Saturday aftemo® ' the Kni^ts will face the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill at three o’clock on the S.A. soccer field. Chapel Hill, a perennial powerhouse in the ACC, will ^ prove a solid test of S.A.’s talait and stamina. Coadi Betts will be aided by assistant coach Skip Fedak who graduated from Pem broke Unitersity several years ago. Coach Fedak’s ability and playing ex perience should aid greatly in the development of the Knights’ young players. Kathy Bell, a native erf Kai- tucky, returns as the team’s manager while Richard Durham will be the team trainer. To be a good soccer player, an athletic must be able tc blend speed, stamina, quick ness and the ability to make correct split-second decisions. More important, one must be able to work easily with the other members of the team unit. Coadi Betts and his staff have the talent, the will power and the motivati(xi to be a strong competitor fra- the Dixie Conference Crown. Youth is basically irrelevant in determining one’s socqpr ability, however; experience and team wwk are the key to a strong soccer team. What this year’s team lacks in ex perience ttiey must make i?) with teamwcH-k and hustle. Only time will tell how the Knights will perform this season. Saturday’s scrim mage will give us a better and mwe in-depth look at the S.A. footers’ strengths and weaknesses. M. Mdsd THE CAMERA SHOP 1310 S. MAIN STREET LAURINBURG, N. C.
