Walter Hautzig’s piano mastery, Vardell’s Chatets printings, the experimental theatre production of Line and the SAS - backed presentation - DO NOT DISTURB: An Evening at Black Mountain College were excellent examples of the varied and creative cultural opportunities to be found here. With the coming of Joel Oppenheimer, Dizzy Gillespie, and Ralph Nader in the coming year, we’ll have good chances for more cultural enjoyment and learning. The testing and encouraging of student talent at Farrago, the fine work done by the curveship press and the St. Andrews Review, flie Crafts Center, student poetry readings, the Cairn, drama productions and musical groups all offer rich opportunities for students to explore and enhance their creative selves. Those who share themselves with us through these endeavors should be applauded and encouraged, for they are a major element in making our campus an alive anc creative place. In my opinion the vast majority of the students here do not take advantage of these creative opportunities. Channeling our energies towards creativity and expression seems to be a far better alternative than the old and stale habit of maintaining our uninvolved or apathetic stance. LETTERS On Violations Of Student Rights To the Editor: For those of you who do not think too hi^ly of their student rights being violated and totally disregarded, you may find this article in teresting. Those of you who don’t display any emotion are {M-obably in a majority at this college. As you may recall, in the last issue of the LANCE, there was an article about the slight difference in opinion between Mecklenburg and Winston-Salem dormitories, this circumstance has so far led to two meinbers of the gathering being dismissed from the college. This obvious ova’-reaction by our Dean of Students simply displays her incapability of handling disciplinary affairs at St. An drews College. For those of you who are not familiar with our new Dean, her name is Maria Santa-Maria, she was formerly a residence director at Eckerd College and is demonstrating that she acted 1. emotionally involved with disciplinary action, 2. in a severe lack of justice and 3. in total disregarf of student rights. This is quite a record considering she accomplished this amazing summation of accomplishments in the cour se of three days. The most ridiculous array of charges against anyone ever were filed by our Dean Santa-Maria against Tom Green. The charges are as follows: your invoh^ement in a fire extinguisher fight at the beginning of the fall term. (This by the way is only a $25.00 Jine):^ Your in- ? C. So, yA Wctl, o.r. Xm'StT\K %rccinM Pt-etvry or XHt eesr VKTH A fs% err CASZ or vA///oe,f?s ^CL >»s re/ Arsta cA^fUtiy, ro/v^ volvement in the disruptive incident d lliursday, Novem ber 22, regarding tampering with fire extinguishers. Your involvement the weekend of November 12-14 with ex plosives. (This involved a fire cracker in the hall of a dor mitory. This charge is clearly a display of over reactiveness.) Your in volvement in GranviDe dorm last year. This last charge needs very little comment as it openly displays the entire intent behind ttie action taken by Dean Santa-Maria. It was made quite dear to me, while meeting with the Dean, that she did not want Tom Green on our campus and this display of charges seems to show to me the means at which she went to do it. A “hearing” for Tom was arranged by Dean Santa- Maria on December 2nd. The Dean informed me that she would give Tom a chance to defend himself. Tom as ac companied by Steve Newtoi and Mark Six for witnesses in Tom’s favor. This “hearing”, through the arrangement of the Dean was apparently to give her the q>portunity to in form Tom that he was “crazy” and that he was not “fit to be on the streets.” This harrassment continued until Dean Santa- Maria adjourned the meeting abruptly. Tom had opportunity to defend himself only in the cases to deny that he was “crazy” and that he thought this “hearing was unfair.” Shortly after the meeting, Tom received a letter in forming him that he was in need of “conditioning and therapy”. I would assume the Dean was recommending psychiatric care as I tend to disbelieve she was speaking of body building. The letter in structed him that he would be dismissed from the college ef fective the next day at 6:00 pm. A ten page letter of appeal explaining the obvious in justice and appauling disregard for students rights as sent to President Perkin- son for appeal. Dean Santa- Maria attempted to again to force Tffln off campus by ad vising him that seeing the President would have to K. ^newhenhewasoffcamn* ms was in strict violatio!; o( the rules of the College that states “Pending action on^ charge, the status of student should not be altered or his right to be present toe camp^...” This attempt failed as Tom was aware of the rules. On Dec. 7 at 9:00 p.m. Tom received a letter from the President stating: “.. After careful consideration i the appeal document, and after consultation with people familiar with the cir cumstances, I have deter mined that the decision must stand...” Tom wiU be able to complete courses however he must do this while living off campus. The letter continued “while I know that these last few days have been difficult, I hope that this will prove to be a learning experience upon which you can build towards more constructive relation ships in the future.” Tom will be dismissed from the college effective after this term. It comes as a surprise to me that our President came to this conclusion after being presented with the violation of procedure and rights on the past rf Dean Santa-Maria.
