Women’s Basketball Promising
By Knight Cbamberlain,
Sports Editor
Women’s basketball is back
and the typical thing to say is
that the girls have tremen
dous potential. It is a safe
statement to make and it
won’t hurt anyone’s feelings,
but it doeai’t say much. Bet
ter, it would seem, to evaluate
the team in teims of strengths
and weakness and see how
these strengths and
weaknesses might stack up
against the opposition.
Although the girls lost their
opener against Methodist
College by a score of 66-47,
Joyce Dew scored 10 field
goals and 7 free throws to
lead the St. Andrews attack
with 27 points. Joyce has been
the mainstay of ttie team sin
ce last year and therefore
brings experience as well as
skill. Harriet Howard leads
the team as point person,
bringing the ball down court
and setting i?) the plays. She
as well as Judy Jordan have
the same ^gressive spirit as
Joyce, but seem to lack the
experience necessary for a
balanced attack. Playing time
will iffovide the experience as
the season progresses but it is
too early to tell how that ex
perience will be utilized.
Methodist players, Barbara
Buie and PriciUa Wassen
combined for a total of 41
points which tends to support
the notion that the best defen
se is a good offense.
In the St. Andrews vs. San
dhills game our team again
lost by a score of 57-47. Here
the Sandhills displayed
quickness combined with
wicked outside shooting that
the lacfy Knights could not
overcome. Joyce Meadows,
Brenda Hward, Corlis
Reynolds, Joyce Dew and
Janeen Taylor led a full court
press with eight minutes left
in the second half that was
commendably effective. The
Sandhills team was forced to
turn over the ball several
times and with two minutes
left the score was 5146, a ten
point comeback effort on the
part of the Knights. But, San
dhills recovered, scoring
three straight baskets to our
on e free throw resulting in
the 10 point spread in the
score. As is so often the c^
the game was decided at ^
free throw line where the
Knights missed well oyer half
the shots, several being one
and one situations.
Rights
also appears as though
student rights and
disciplinary case procedurC )
are meaningless with our
present administration.
I am presently disappointed
in our Presidents action and
would appreciate from him a
brief explanation of the cour
se of his consideration. The
course of action for Tom is
not divided as appeal to the
judgement of the President
was his last recourse. It
would appear tat the students
of a. Andrews will have to
surrender their rights and
place themselves at the mer
cy of an apparently
inequitable administration.

William A. Brennan
