(Photo by Lisa Wollman) Highland Players Season To Begin This Month The musical “Company” will lead the Highland Players into their 1977-78 season this month at St. Andrews with a series of plays directed by three senior students following in December, “The Little Foxes” in March and an adaptation of DMoliere en titled “Scapino” in April. “Company”, directed by assistant drama professor Brad Ford, is scheduled for October 28-30 in the Liberal Arts Auditorium. A sophiscated musical comedy that explores marriage, manners and moods in con temporary society, the plot revolves around a 35-year old bachelor played by senior Jim “Umgardner. “Company” and other productions by the Highland Players will run for three ™gnts this year, according to Arthur McDonald, theatre ^*'airman. “We have Q f the audience P efers Fnday, Saturday and Sunday nights. If the play is very successful, we’ll hold it over, but we’re sure that the greatest demand will be for these nights,” he said. In December three upper level senior students, Vanessa Karns, David Miller and Michael Reeve, will direct “A Marriage Proposal”, “Miss Julie”, and “The Stronger”, respectively. Dealing with the struggle of the psyche through comie and tragic modes, the productions represent a unique op portunity for thepublic to gUmpse young, talent, Mc Donald says, and will also recognize the high level of achievement of these students. A fourth student will be recognized for his talent when Bill Allen, a senior from High Point and a frequent per former in the Highland Player productions, directs Lillian (Continued on Page 2) Admissions Makes Pitch For Students In an attempt to identify high school juniors and seniors who might be in terested in St. Andrews Presbyterian College, the St. Andrews Admissions Office is requesting the help of all the St. Andrews community. According to Dudley Crawford, Director of Ad missions, all of the currently enrolled students were written in August of this year requesting that they ascertain the names and addresses of interested students from their particular geographic area. (continued on Page 2) Student Association President Celeste TiUson announced the student ap pointments to student - faculty committees this week. The names were approved by the Cabinet last week and were approved by the Faculty Executive Committee this past Monday. Due to some restructuring of faculty committees several com mittees, including Library and Publications Committee, were dropped and a few were formed, including the Lear ning Resources Committee. Committee appointments announced included: (1) - Campus Planning and Space Utilization Committee - Terri Heyman, who worked for the Atlanta City Planning Commission, this past sum mer, and Sand Baldwin, a freshman, (2) - Educational Policy Committee - John Green, a junior and Donna Kline, a new student at SA, (3) - Learning Resources - Steve Newton, Vice-president of Mecklenberg Hall and Butch Keller, a junior, (4) - Special Events - Kathy De Vane, a senior; Ed Wilson, President of the Club, is an ex officio member, (5) - Student Life Committee - Garnett Conaway, President of Wilmington Dorm, Fran Newbold, a former Wilmington Donn Senator, Lin Thompson, Program Director at WSAP, Will Hazelden, vice-chairman of the St. Andrews Republican Committee, Warra Foster, a freshman, and Tommy Brown, a junior, (6) - Faculty Exectuvie Committee (FEC) Sub committee on Student Problems - Nancy Small, a former assistant attorney general. Celeste Tillson, Student Association President, George Anderson, a freshman, and John Patton, a Granville senator. A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Plant Store, . BY STEVEN J. KUNKLE “I went in to buy a plant and instead bought the store,” says Mike Council, a 1977 St. Andrews graduate and now Owner of the Hanging Basket, a plant store located in Laurinburg. “I had graduated and couldn’t find a job in Laurinburg, so I went in to buy some plants one day and it looked better and better to me, so I bought the store from Cheryl Victor.” The Hanging Basket, located right next to the un derpass at 1628 South Main, is filled with plants, advice, and good humor. “I’m giving a 10 percent discount to all St. Andrews students and faculty,” Mike points out. “I want to en courage the students to stop by, even if it’s just to talk for awhile and visit.” Going into business was easy, but the hard part is getting patronage. “The people of Laurinburg are nicer than the average, but they don’t like the hard sell., When they’re ready, they’ll come to me, and I’ll be waiting here. I have a lot of storage space to rent, but I can’t rent it now. When they’re ready. I’ll give them a good deal.” “St. Andrews students don’t stay in Laurinburg after they graduate. In my class there were only two I can think of, myself and John Copeland. (Continued on page 2) Movie Time Changed The College Union movie Of the Week has been moved back a couple of hours this Sunday to allow audiences to see it and an award winning film on television the same night. Movie chairman Lin Thompson told THE LANCE that “What’s Up, Doc?” the comedy hit with Barbra Streisand and Ryan O’Neal.
