The Knights were first beaten by UNC-Greensboro 65-63 in a game tied a totle of 16 times. Leading scorers in the contest were Mike Cestrone with 18 and Paul Kowall with 12. Butch Keller and Cliff Summers each added 10 apiece. The second loss of the week was handed the Knights by a The course “History, Culture and Society”, taught by Charles W. Joyner, associate professor of history and anthropology at St. An drews Presbyterian College, has been called one of the “most creative” history courses in the country by authors W. Wayne Smith, Steve Schoenherr and Judy Wellman in their new book, “New Approaches in Teaching Local History.” Combing historical research with anthropological and sociological analysis, the course is praised by the authors for “imaginative use of secondary material” and “heavy iemphasis on methodology and sources.” They are impressed by the accessibility of rich bodies of source materials combined with the new techniques of social history, family history, and urban history. The authors praise Joyner’s “sensitivity to the variety of people who lived in any particular place-to the women as well as the men, to ethnic minorities and working class peoDle.” According to Joyner, the course is designed as an advanced inter-disciplinary workshop and research seminar in theoretical and methodological relationships between history, an thropology and sociology, and in the application of such theories and methods 'to topics relating to South Carolina in the 19th century. A number of manuscript collections have been microfilmed for the course from the South Caroliniana research library at the University of South Carolina. In addition there are microfilms of the South Carolina census for 1850 through 1880 as well as zerox copies of such material as probate records and church records., As students research such sources, they also reading assignments sociological and thropological theory, which serve as the basis of their analysis. The authors, W. Wayne Smith, Steve Schoenherr and Judy Wellman, are history professors at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, University of San Diego and State University of New York at Oswego, respectively.
