‘Based upon at least 7 games played
St. Andrews baseball team
went into their doubleheader
with undefeated Westfield
State with a record of 3 and 8.
When Westfield State
returned home they had two
loses: two Saint Andrews
victories. The first game went
10-5 with 14 hits in the game.
Keith Betts brought in the
first run of the game with a
home run. Whitby followed in
the second on a triple from
Lazzari, then Betts returned
in the third for another home
run which brought in Bland
leaving the score at the
bottom of the third 4-0. The
fifth inning was batting
practice for the Knights with
hits by Dean (triple) Ray,
Gamble, Scott (double) and
Bland. Dean made the final
and tenth run in the sixth in a
double by Gamble. Barber
was the winning pitcher with
a save by Eric St. John. The
second game was 10-3 victory
with runs by Scott (2), Betts
(2), Ferrell, Whitby, Dean,
Lazzari and Harrison (2).
Scott went 4 for 5 in the game
and Ferrell and Harrison both
hit doubles. Dean gave up 9
hits and 0 walks for the vic
tory.
St. Andrews next con
frontation was a disap
pointing double header with
Methodist St. John pitchered
an excellent game giving up
only 2 runs (1 earned) only 5
hits, no walks and 4
strikeouts. The game ran tied
until the bottom of the
seventh inning 1. Carrigg
made St. Andrews only run in
the 3rd by stealing home. In
the bottom of the 7th with one
out the batter hit the first
pitch over the left field fence
robbing St. John of a well
deserved win.
Methodist walked away
with the second game 2-5.
Both St. Andrews runs were
scored by Rick Scott. Dean
St. Andrews bounced back
against N.C. Wesleyan on
Tuesday with a double vic
tory. St. John pitched a 10-2
victory giving up only 3 hits.
Environmental Studies In Danger
disciplines with Dr. MUler
coordinating the program.
Dr. George Fouke took over ^
the program when Miller left
St. Andrews in 1976 and
coordinated activities until the
1977-78 school year. Fouke is
currently taking one year
leave of absence in Chapel
Hill. The major also lost the
Religion and Economics
programs at the culmination
of the 1975-76 school year.
The program has been
taken over by Dr. Jones and
currently has three par
ticipating faculty, A.L. Ap
plegate, W.M. Alexander, and
C. Bushoven representing
Biology, Philosophy and
Politics disciplines.
Students and faculty alike
have complained that the
program is not fulfilling the
original intentions. Unless
changes in the existing
program are instigated, the
Environmental Studies major
may be abolished or altered
toward the science program.
The feeling of some of the
students is a dissatsfaction
with the organization of the
major and attitudes of the
Environmental Studies
faculty. The Environmental
Studies courses take a lower
priority to the full teaching
loads of the faculties’ own
programs. A major contention
involves the lack of En
vironmental Studies courses
which are offered. The 1977-78
catalogue requires seven
Environmental Studied
courses with four at the 300400
level. Many Environmental
Studies majors have found it
difficult to fulfill the number
of required courses which has
jeopardized the contracts of
several upper level students.
Faculty members have
complained that they have
been burdened with extra
course loads in addition to
their already full teaching
loads. The lack of a structured
program has made it difficult
for scheduled meetings.
Jones met with Dean
Crossley and together with
faculty members will be
scheduling Environmental
Studies Research and Senior
Seminars at a specific time
rather than TBA.
St. Andrews held batting
practice once again in the 3rd
and 6th innings with 4 runs in
each inning; 2 in the fifth.
Everyone got at least one khit
with doubles by Scott, Dean
and Carrigg and triples by
Scott and Betts.
The second game was a cliff
hanger with St. Andrews
leading 7-0 in the fourth. In
the siirth inning the score wa,
tied 7-7 and the bottom of J
line ups in. It wasn’t tiUt
extra eighth inning with bases
loaded that Mike Poicn„
walked to bring Neal GorS
in for the winning run.
St. Andrews heads for
Virgima Wesleyan on ih, ,2
with a record of 2-4
conference.
