Page 4 Splits With A.C.C. After splitting a doubleheader with Atlantic Christian yesterday, the St. Andrews nine will host Westfield State this Friday. In a tour through North Carolina last year, Westfield racked up an 11-2 mark beating such teams as Campbell, Methodist, and UNC- Wilmington; their only losses came against the Knights. With the split against ACC, the Knights maintained a mark one game over .500 at 4- 3. SA won the first contest, 3-2; but lost the second, failing to produce the hits, 8-5. In the second inning of the game, Scotland High graduate Frank Carmichael was in jured on a relay from the centerfieldr. Carmichael suffered two broken bones around his left eye and was held at the hospital for further observation. The Bulldogs, from Wilson, scored early in the first contest, picking up one run in both the first and second in nings. The Knights scored one of their own in the third, when Rod Whitby came home on a fielder’s choice. They tied the score in the fifth as John Carrigg rapped out a single driving Keith Betts in. Co-captain Rick Scott scored the winning run for SA in the seventh. Whitby grounded to the second baseman, who overthrew, allowing both Scott and Whitby to advance. A second errant throw, sailing into the Knights’ dugout, moved Scott home from third. Craig Withrow, in relief for Doug Pierson, scored the win giving him a 1-0 mark on the year. In the second game, it was the Knights who grabbed a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Betts singled to drive in Scott for the first run. Carrigg collected his second RBI of the day with a single that scored Whitby. The final run of the inning came on a walk issued to Mike Ortiz that forced Betts in. SA scored again in the second inning as Whitby and Betts received bases on balls. Whitby then scored from second on John Ferrell’s single. Then in the fourth inning the Bulldogs exploded. Larry Hodges started the inning with a home run over the left field fence. Before the inning was over, ACC had four more runs on two hits and a walk. The Knights never recovered from this blow. Their only other run came in the fifth as Ferrell moved around the bases on two errors and scored on Carrigg’s sacrifice. Proctor Freeman started the game for SA, but was replaced by Randy Odom in the fourth. Eddie Dean replaced Odom the next in ning. Odom picked up the loss and has an 0-1 record. Women Walk Over Wingate St. Andrews News Bureau The Lady Knights of SA invited their counterparts from Wingate College to a party Tuesday afternoon, and then proceeded to give them an 8-1 trouncing on the tennis courts. Haywood -Williams, 6-3,6-0. St. Andrews swept a doubleheader from league- leading Virginia Wesleyan, Saturday afternoon, to raise their record to 3-2. The Knights have a 2-0 mark in the Dixie Conference. The SA nine took the first contest, 8-6, with an eight run rally in the sixth inning. In the second game, they scored a 7-6 victory. The Marlins acquired a solid 6-0 lead with a four run fourth inning, adding two more inthe fifth. The bottom of the sixth began with three walks issued to Knight batters. Freshman Mike Ortiz drove in three runs on the next play with a long single. Rick Scott drew another walk to load the bases on a second time in the same inning. Two more bases on balls drove Ortiz and Scott Harrison home. After a fielder’s choice, Marty Hat- chell drove in the winning run with a single. Ortiz, with his second at bat of the inning, accepted the eighth walk of the sixth, to score John Ferrell for the final run of the game. Pitcher Eddie Dean started the game for St. Andrews, but was ejected in the fourth in ning after several disputed calls. Jim Worley replaced Dean, allowing three runs in three innings. Joe Cornelius finished the game, pitching the last two outs. Cornelius then pitched the following game, giving up five runs in the first inning, but only one more on a home run in the third. It was his second win of the season against no losses. The Knights answered the five runs by the Marlins in the bottom of the first with five runs of their own. With two outs and men on second and third, John Carrigg reached second safely on an overthrow by the shortstop. Rick Scott and John Ferrell scored on the play. Marty Hatchell drove Carrigg in with a double and scored on the next play, as the VWC centerfielder dropped Rick Bland’s fly. Bland scored, as the next batter. Ortiz, hit a long shot to the hole in right-center. St. Andrews scored the winning runs in the third in ning. Bland started the rally with a single; he reached third on Harrison’s single and an error. Bland scored on the play. On the ensuing wild pitch, Ortiz tried to score, but was thrown out at the plate. Harrison advanced to third and scored on a single by Rod Whitby.
