Honesty, sincerity, and truth; how far do they get you on the Saint Andrews campus? Today, the court of our college, better known as the Judicial Board, is close to its goal of objectivity. Ob jectivity is just one of the many concerns of the dedicated members, two basic issues of the board are to decide law and to try fact. Students of our school look to the Judicial Board as a representative of justice and law. Many of the students have said that the ad ministration of the school should adopt, if they haven’t already, this policy. The chairman of the Board, Jeff Keys, stated that he thought the administration was, “undermining the function and independence of the board” and, “he would be afraid to appear before the Judicial Board of Saint Andrews.” In stating this, Jeff mentioned, an inquistion system vs. an adversary system. At. St. Andrews, on paper we have an adversary By LISA MOLLER system though in practice, we have an inquisition system. An adversary court presents two sides to an impartial jury, whereas an inquisition court has one conunittee that listens to a prosecution that could overbalance the defense. In reply, Jerry Surface, Assistant Dean of Students, has said that, ’“The ad ministration must protect the philosophy of the college.” However, a number of students have, wondered if this means that the ‘philosophy of the college’ is working against our Judicial Board? Granville (Jeff) Keys, the chairman of the Judicial Board said that, “the board works well, within the present system, but under a revised system could work to full capacity.” Many members of this student group feel that the attitude of the administration could be a little more supportive. On January 9, 1980, Jeff Keys was speaking with Mr. Jerry Surface, in front of The Belk College Center. In a voice audible from 30 feet away, a remark concerning a defendant of the case, was thrown out to Jeff Keys, a Judicial Board member, Mr. Surface said, “Wei I guess we never ac cused him of being smart.” Keys says, “Such a remark could prejudice a Judicial Board member in regard to the case,” which at the time had not been heard. The fact that the statement from the administrative member was said before the case was heard was highly improper. Upon interview Mr. Surface said, “That the remark was made after the case was heard.” Mr. Surface declared that he had not intended the remark as one to a Judicial Board member, but rather to a feUow human being, that is, as a remark made in jest.
