MORE [Vf S A night games ^ £ INT ANDREWS SPORTS V- Tall team takes the court By RICK HANNA During the 1981-82 season, the Lady Knights will be in a new conference, the Dixie Conference, which is NCAA Division III. Last year in the Southern Region II of the AIAW, Division II, the squad finished 9-6 with an overall record of 12-8. Only one player is lost from last year’s team. Catherine “Seal” Arm strong, Teresa “Slick” Robin, Virginia “McColl” Williams, Renee Hales, Kathy Daniels, and Eva Pitt man are all experienced and can expect to see a con siderable amount of playing time. In describing this year’s unit the team’s new Coach Betsy Graham said, “We are a stronger team inside with Renee, who is returning for her second year after a one year absence, Eva, “Seal,” and “McColl”. The floor leader will be “Slick,” who has assumed that position for the past three years.” Another important factor is the squad’s average height, an impressive 5’8Vi”. Coach Graham feels that “This team should do very well, but playing in a new conference can be a big factor.” She ad ded, “I hope the Christmas layoff won’t hurt the team in any fashion.” Last year’s team was 4-4 against Dixie Conference opponents. Coacn Graham likes a con trol tempo game with a substantial amount of transi tion. Another key element in Coach Graham’s game plan WINTER SPORTS MEN’S BASKETBALL 1981-82 Date Opponent Time Location Fri.rSat., Nov.20-21Tip-off Doubteheader • Emory & Henry Home Methodist, Oglethorpe Tues., Nov. 24 Pembroke State Univ’erslty Away Sat., Nov. 28 Belmont Abbey College Away Tucs., Dec. 1 Greerisboro College Home Sat., Dec. 5 Coker College Away Sat., Dec. 12 Emory & Henry College Away Mon., Jan 4 Millsaps College Away Tues., Jan. 5 William Ceirey College Away Fri.-Sat., Jan. 8-9 Francis Marion College Tournament Away Fri., Jan. 15 Virginia Wesleyevi College Home Sat., Jan. 16 Christopher Newport College Home Wed., Jan.20 Averett College Away Sat., Jan 23 North Carolina Wesleyan College Away Tues., Jan 26 UNC—Gre^sboro Home Thurs., Jan 28 Methodist College Home Sat., Jan 30 Greensboro College Away Wed., Feb. 3 Averett College Home Fri., Feb. 5 Chri&tophei Newport CoDege Away Sat., Feb. 6 Virginia Wesleyan College Away Tues., Feb. 9 Methodist College Away Thurs., Feb. 11 Coker College Home Wed., Feb. 17 UNC-Greensboro Away Sat., Feb. 20 North Cardina Wesleyan College Home Feb. 24, 26-27 DIAC Tournament TBA Coach: Doug Riley Home Games: 7:30 p.ra WOMEN’S BASKETBALL 1981-82 Fri., Nov. 20 Methodist College - 7:00 Away Tues., Nov. 24 Wingate College - 7:00 Away Wed., Dec. 2 Greensboro College - 7:00 Home Thurs., Dec. 3 Coital Carolina College • 7:00 Away Tues., Dec 8 Coker College - 7:00 Home Thurs., Dec. 10 Meredith College ■ 7:00 Home Wed., Jan. 13 North Carolina Wesleyan College • 7:30 Away Fri., Jan. 15 Virginia Wesleyan College • 5:45 Home Sat., Jan. 16 Christopher Newport College • 5:45 Home Wed., Jan. 20 Wingate College - 7:00 Home Sat., Jan. 23 Pfeiffer College -5:30 Away Wed., Jan. 27 UNC-Greensboro - 7:00 Home Sat.. More emphasis will be put on man-to-man defense this year. There is not an excessive amount of depth on the Lady Knights bench, but Coach Graham feels that there is more than enough talent. So, with a group of tall, talented ladies, a new con ference, a good coach, who is in her first year, and some help from Lady Luck, the Lady Knights of St. Andrews are lookng forward to a great season. n The grimacing expression on the face of St. Andrews freshman eager Pat Donovan displays the over-all frustration of the St. Andrews basketball team as it competed in wheelchairs against the Fayetteville Trotters, a professional wheelchair team. The Trotters, who have had vast experience maneuvering on the hardwood, won handily 66-14. York leaves team Knights defend Dixie crowi J By DWAYNE SNOWDEN The St. Andrews Knights strong performances in last year’s Dixie Conference tournament and the NCAA Southern Regional Tourna ment have fans and players excited about the 1981-82 season. The squad finished 24-7, enjoying a narrow win in the conference tournament championship game with a 64-63 win over Christopher Newport and played gallant ly in the opening round of the NCAA Southern Regional before succumbing to Southwestern of Ten nessee by two points. Before thinlcing about a return engagement to the NCAAs’, the Knights have their conference crown to de fend. Returning in the backcourt is sensational junior guard Will Petersen, who was selected to the DIAC All-Conference team and finished third in the na tion among Division III scorers (26.4 ppg). James “J.R.” Sutton, a 6’3” sophomore received a lot of playing time opposite Petersen in the backcourt last season and although he was bothered by pre-season in juries, he should return at full strength for the season opener. Should either of these players get into foul trouble Head Coach Doug Riley has a talented array of freshmen guards whom he can depend on. The frontcourt features senior shot blocking artist, 6’6” center Jackie Amos (11 ppg and 12 rebounds per game) and 6’3” senior for ward Clayton “Akma” White (15.4 ppg and 8 re bounds per game); both se cond team All Conference selections. Missing is 6’7” senior David York who left the squad for personal reasons. York’s experience and 7.3 ppg and seven re bounds per game will be severely missed. Junior A1 Gibbs, a 6’3” forward, who showed flashes of his poten tial in the NCAA Southern Regional will play a large role in the Knight fortunes this season. The only other returners are both sophomores, 6’6” center William “T.C.” McCollum and 6’3” forward Eric “Smooth” Miller. Coach Riley also recruited talented- freshmen to bolster the frontline corps. If the Knights can avoid key injuries and the freshmen class, which composes half the team, can produce im mediately, this will be the most memorable year in St. Andrews basketball history as St. Andrews begins its quest to repeat as conference champions. The Knights open their season tonign with the Tip-Of doubleheader against Emory and Henry College Virginia. Game time is p.m. at Harris Courts. If yo“ can’t make the game, WSA will be providing coverage (640 AM and FM).
