At the end of this nominating period, seven students expressed in terest in vying for top cabinet positions. Only two of these positions, those of vice- president and attorney general, are contested. SGA oresidential can- candidate Ike McRee will run without opposition. So will CUB presidential candidate Greg Mau. LANCE editor candidate Bill Lide will be voted on without competi tion. I Stiff campaigns are gearing up between SGA Vice-Presidential hopefuls Bob Dascombe, Joe Newell, and David Saunier. Also, CCU Presidential and Vice-Presidential posts will be decided in races bet ween Chuck Booker and Bobby Capps, and Gene Henderson and Pay! Tur- campus elections and inform student voters of candidate platforms and enthusiasm, THE LANCE staff polled contenders for major college offices on the following questions; 1) Why do you want to run for office? 2) What are your qualifica tions for the office? 3) What do you viewu your major reponsibilitiesj elected? 4) How do you feeltl) current SGA, CCU, CUB o, LANCE might be improvit Verbatim, unediw responses from the cai didates said; In an effort to promote SGA Candidate for President I wish to run for the office of SGA President because I feel the need to continue the efficiency, professionahsm, and service to students in itiated through the Student Government Association this year. The continuation of these ideals will undoubtedly result in a legitimate student governmental structure. The necessity for a well in formed and experienced in dividual to direct the Association next year, to work closely with the new Dean of Students and a revitalized Student Life pro gram, and the implementa tion of a new Student Con stitution have all led me to my decision to seek this of fice. During the past several years my involvement in the following areas gives me the extensive background needed in directing the Student Association; Member, Student Life Committee Task Force on the Honor Code and Judicial Svstem 1980-81; Social Chair personandcUB Repre sentative from Albemarle Dorm 1980-81; Participant in Council for the Advance ment of Small Colleges Human Development Con ference at Bradley University 1981; SGA Attorney General 1981-82; Member, Student Life Committee 1981-82, Co author of proposed Student Constitution, Member, Handbook Committee 1981-82. The major responsibilities of the SGA President are to direct the Student Associa tion and as Chairperson of the Cabinet implement Stu dent Association policies and programs. The president is also the main link between the study body and ad ministration responding to proposals or actions as the student body’s primary representative. Initiating student pro grams is another responsibili ty of the president and I in tend to implement the following policy/programs; -Continue working toward ratification of the proposed Student Constitution so that IKE McREE McRee: “. possibilities for student government in the life of St. Andrews is almost limitless. ” it will be in effect by October of 1982 at the latest; -Initiate with the Dean of Students more service oriented programs for students. It is time that students be thought of and treated as consumers; -Implementation of a Residential Personalization Program. In this program students will be encouraged to create an atmosphere in their rooms reflective of in dividual student per sonalities. I envision SGA. Presidential Candidate for CUB-JOHN PERKINSON Perkinson: “We need new ideas, new people and new activities on campus." I have decided to run for this position because I feel the board has been inade quate in the past. There are a number of areas in which I see the need for improvement lin the CUB.- The board needs more diversity in its programming. At the present time the major activities are beer, bands, and an occasional movie. There are certainly more social Activities than just these. I think we can bring more creativity into the board. I feel that one of the major qualifications I have for this job is I played in a band for five years and enjoy pro viding entertainment for peo ple. I am currently serving on the Senate as Vice-President' of Granville, which has given me more insight into student affairs. I am working towards a business major which involves the necessary skills in running the board ef ficiently. My responsibilities, if elected, will be to bring new life to the board. The parties here on campus have become just plain boring. We need new ideas, new people, and new activities on campus. With the new Dean of Students approach to student life, these new ideas will become a reality. Also, I believe we need to make bet ter use of the $17,000 budget. maintenance, and the Stu dent Life Office working closely together to provide students with means of ob taining materials and technical assistance as they participate in the program; -Creation of an ad hoc committee on Residential Policy Reform consisting of students and members of the administration to carefully scrutinize Housing Contracts and residential politics mak ing changes where necessary; -Encourage clubs and organizations of the Student Association to reach out to the Laurinburg community linking up with civic and church groups volunteering service to the community. This is an important step in. creating better relations with the citizens of Laurinburg and will do much to better the reputation of St. An drews; -In order that the St. An drews community may con tinue to familiarize itself with national issues that concern students I plan for SGA to become members in good Candidate for CUB Presi dent. .GREG MAU Mau: “Next year if elected I plan to head a reorganiza tion effort to reconstruct the College Union Board. ” I feel there is a great need to reconstruct the College Union Board and with my past three years experience on the board I feel I am most capable of accomplishing this task. My qualifications are; My freshman year I was social chairperson for Granville Dorm. This is one of eight voting positions on the Col lege Union Board. In my sophomore year I was Vice- President and later President of the CUB because the former president left school. This year I am currently Treasurer and Head of the Board of Elections Commit tee. I have attended the Na tional Entertainment and Campus Activities Associa tion regional and national conferences. These con ferences are basically an avenue for many schools to book bands at cheaper prices through block bookings, and seminars or managing stu dent activities on college or university campuses. I am also majoring in Business Management and plan to go into the manage ment part of the music in dustry when I graduate in ’83.
