Daniels Juggles Volleyball,Teaching By RICK HANNA “How was your day at school?” was a question Kathy Daniels was asked fre quently this year, especially on volleyall road trips. Aside from the rigors of competing with the volleyball team, Kathy has been student teaching this semester. Since the 28th of August, Kathy has been a secondary English teacher at Scotland High School. Her day as a teacher begins at 7:30 a.m. and ends at 3:00 p.m.; which left room for volleyball prac tice and lesson plans at night. “I spent many sleepless nights this semester, especial ly on the nights of away trips. I didn’t think it would affect my playing but it did,” said Kathy. “Overall, this was our best season. We finished 29-13 and won t tournament. I wanted to play volleyball and it served as my outlet. Stu dent teaching was a culmina tion of my four years at St. Andrews,” said Kathy. As a member of the St. Andrews volleyball team Kathy was team captain, a senior leader, was named to the DIAC All-Conference team (along with teammates Eva Pittman and Janice Dent) and was voted DIAC “Player of the Week”, an award she says, “I won because of leadership, not my stats.” Kathy, who has lettered in volleyball, basketball and softball during her four eyars at St. Andrews, is taking a “break” for the rest of the semester by sitting out during basketball season, but will resume athletics with softball in the spring. “I want this break,” she said. Aside from her success on the court, Kathy was pleased with her student teaching as well. Upon graduation, she hopes to get a teaching and coaching position. However graduate school isn’t out of the question. “It seemed like the harder I was pushed the better I per formed^ It was good for me,” said Kathy. There was not a second of hesitation- when she said she would do it all over again, “now that I know how to do it.” \Spartans, Lady Knights Picked 1-2 DIAC 1982-83 Women’s Basketball Pre-season Poll—82-83 pick (6 coaches voting) 1.
