women’s tennis team cap
tured second play in the Dix
ie Conference Tournament
held April 22-23 at
Christopher Newport Col
lege. Perennial power
University of North
Carolina-Greensboro took
the championship.
But St. Andrews, which
improved upon its third place
finish of a year ago, at least
had a chance of upsetting
UNC-Greensboro. The
Knights were in competition
for three finals titles in
singles and two in doubles.
In singles play, Kim Lutian
defeated Virginia Wesleyan’s
Virginia Watford 6-4, 6-3 in
the semi-finals of the second
flight. Lutian fell in the
finals to Lisa Zimmerman of
UNC-G, 6-1, 6-2.
In the fourth flight, Mar
sha Sanderson advanced to
the finals with a 6-1, 6-1 win
over Sonya Godwin of
Virginia Wesleyan. Sander
son lost in the finals to
UNC—G’s Barbara 6ailer,
6-2, 6-1.
And in the fifth flight,
Carole Knox defeated Petra
Roehrle of Christopher
Newport 6-3, 6-1 in the
semin-finals, then fell to
Maureen Kimtis of UNC-
6-0, 6-0 in the finals.
In other singles matches,
Lndia Kundis lost in the
opening round to ^aren
Hastings of Christopher
Newport 7-5, 6-4; Mildred
Lee lost her third flight bid to
Jenny Nuttycombe 6-4, 7-5;
and Betsey B rown lost in the
semi-finals of the sixth flight
to Jo Anne Holmes of
Christopher Newport, 6-4,
6-2.
In the doubles competi
tion, two St. Andrews teams
made it to the finals. Lee and
Sanderson defeated Watford
and Godwin (Va. Wesleyan)
6-2, 6-3 in the semi-finals of
the second flight. In the
championship round, they
fell to Bailer and Barnett of
UNC-Greensboro, 6-1, 6-1.

Allison Morris defeated
Hastings and Roehrle of
Christopher Newport 7-6,
7-5 in the semi-finals of the
third flight, but lost to
UNC—G’s Kimtis and
Albright in the finals, 6-0,
6-4.
In the top flight of doubles
play, the Knight team of
Kundis and Lutian lost to
Haldis and Vonier of
Virginia Wesleyan, 6-1, 6-1.
UNCXi’s sweep of singles
and doubles earned the
Greensboro squad 40 team
points and first place. St.
Andrews was second with 10,
Christopher Newport had
seven, Virginia Wesleyan had
five and Greensbdro College
had three.

at Banquet

of their teams at the Athletic Banquet.

drews Presbyterian College
honored its varsity athletes
Monday night at the 22nd
Annual Varsity Athletic
Awards Banquet.
Athletic Director Julian
Smith called 1982-83 a great
sports year for St. Andrews
and its athletes- individuals
who he said had been leaders
both on and off the playing
fields and courts.
Highlighting the award
presentations was the an
nouncement of the “Most
Valuable Player” recipients
in the major sports.
Will Petersen and Eva Pit
tman, the Knights’ basket
ball All Americas who gained
national recognition during
the 1982-83 season, were
voted by their teammates the
best players in men’s and
women’s basketball.
Bill Etchison, the only col
lege baseball player to pitch a
no-hitter in North Carolina
this year, was named MVP
for his squad. Etchison also
received the Cap Clark
Award for excellence on the
playing field and in the
classroom.
Other MVP recipients in
cluded Janice Dent,
volleyball; Marsha Sander
son, tennis; Scott Dormire,
Soccer; Marcus Tuttle Jr.,
men’s tennis; Daniel Clark,
cross country; Steven
Rogers, track; Lydia Lavelle,
softball; Lee Weber, golf;
and Shawnda Davis,
cheerleading.
Nine seniors received the
Senior Award for having
partiicpate in a varsity sport
each year that they attended
St. Andrews. The award is
given by the coaches to the
athletes they feel made ex
ceptional contributions to
the success and morale of
their teams. The recipients
included A1 Gibbs, Will
Petersen, A1 Perkinson III,
Shawnda Davis, Marsha
Sanderson, Steven Rogers,
Cynthia Terrell, Darren
Bostic and Kathy Daniels.
They were presented a watch
by A. P. Perkinson Jr.,
president of the college.
Athletes making All Dixie
Intercollegiate Athletic Con
ference and “Dixie Player of
the Week” during thei
respective seasons also were
recognized.
S.A. Receives
Grant
From Sears
St. Andrews has received a
$400 grant from The Sears-
Roebuck Foundation.
St. Andrews is one of 946
private accredited two and
four year institutions across
the country which are shar
ing in $1,565,000 in Sears
Foundation funds for
1982-83 academic year.
Funds may be used as the
colleges and universities
deem necessary.
