Press, Review Receive Support September 3, 1983 Recently, St. Andrews has received support for its Press and the “St. Andrews Review” through two generous grants—one from the N.C. Arts Council and the other from the poet Ethel Fortner. The NCAC has acknowledged the “St. An drews Review” as a highly acclaimed literary work thoughout the nation, and therefore has contributed $2,700 to its funding. The “Review” publishes works from the arts and humanitites areas and often has entries from well known authors such as Patricia de Rachewiltz, granddaughter of the late Ezra Pound, and Oregon Poet Ethel Fortner has given the St. Andrews Press and “st. Andrews Review” a $10,000 gift- St. Andrews’ own professor of English, Carl Bennett. This is the twelfth con secutive year that St. An drews has received this grant from the NCAC. The St. Andrews Press, from which comes the “St. Andrews Review,” has received $10,000 from distinguished Oregon poet, Ethel Fortner, making her the doner of the largest grant ever awarded to the press. This money is to be directed to the reconstruction of a classroom into “The Fortner Press and Review Room” where an office for the Press director will be located as well as a room for literary tasks such as editing and reviewing. Beyond her initial $10,000 grant, Ms. Fortner has also announced her continuing support of the Press through quarterly cash donations. On the support received by the college, St. Andrews President A. P. Perkinson says, “We see this as an en dorsement of the fine work being done by the editors and contributing writers of the “Review,” certainly one of America’s finest literary publications.” Director of the St. An drews Press, Jack Roper states that he is confident that the St. Andrews Press will continue to be a literary outlet for authors even in an age where the small press is struggling.
