The Lance September 9, 1983 7 TSmwiS This is the team the Coots opponents will face in ' 83. Knights Open Coots Look Promising in ‘83 By Kenneth Rogers Soccer By Kim Wallace The Knights Varsity soccer team has not had many memorable seasons within the last decade, which has been both frustrating and disappointing to team members and fans. Under the strong leadership of new head coach Mike Fedak, both fans and members may be in for a long awaited sur prise. Upon receiving the official word in March that he would be head coach, Fedak began to plan his strategies for the upcoming season. He began with some rigorous recruiting focusing primarily in the North - Pennsylvania, Maine and New Jersey being the major areas of attention. This proved to be a valuable area as the Knights, have add ed two All-State players as well as a number of other talented freshmen to this year’s team. He also had a summer cor respondence with the team which included a training schedule that would enable them to get in shape by the time practice officially began at the end of August. With all these factors working in his favor, Fedak is hoping to produce a soccer program worthy of recognition. “My major goals for this team are to build a solid, competetive program, to strengthen the team’s overall attitude, and moreover to improve on their talent while having them play, more ag gressive ball,” commented Fedak. ‘While we have a very talented group of recruits, I am relying heavily on our J'sturning members to be the backbone of the team.” Among those returning is year’s MVP Scott Dor- ’’’■re who is as are others. very encouraged by the overall spirit and perfor mance that team has demonstrated thus far. “We are playing more as a unit rather than relying on individual efforts to pull us through,” said Dormire. Althought the team is mentally and phsically prepared for a rewarding season, their task will not be an easy One. They open their season at Wake Forest which has had a competetive team in the past, and then journey on to UNC Greensboro, who was ranked #1 in the nation for their division last year, later in the season. “The team is defensively more sound than offensively at the present,” said Fedak. “This team has lacked good strikers in previous years, so a lot of concentration has gone to that area.” Although certain areas have received more attention than others, no one has been deprived of the rigorous training routine that Fedak has laid out for them. This routine consists of outdoor practices and timed runnings as well as a lecture- discussion meeting in the evening which aids in boosting team spirit and morale. All in all, the team is shap ing up to be the best in years. All members seem to share the “winning spirit” and are anxious to prove themselves to both fans and opposition. W Returning to the courts with a previous record of 29-13, the ‘83 version of the S.A. Volleyball Team looks promising. Although the Knights were ranked fourth in the Dixie conference last year, many observers said that they feel that the team will be strong contenders for the number one spot this year. “Although we lost four starters from last years squad, the returning players and in coming freshmen should make up for the loss,” said team captain Eva Pittman. According to Pittman, the team this year is relatively young and lacks height, but she said that she doesn’t feel that this deficiency will effect the final outcome. Even though inexperience is a big factor, Pittman said that speed and skill of the game will make up for it. This year’s team, accor ding to Pittman is the result of a three year building pro cess. previously, the team’s record stood as 16-14, 14-17, and 29-13. With skill,' team work and the support of fans, the ‘83 record will hopefully show an undefeated season. Pittman also said that she feels that veteran volleyball coach, Joann Williams deserves much credit for the team’s success. In Pittman’s words, “Miss Williams is the greatest coach that I’ve ever had and no matter what honors the team or I receive, we owe it all to her.” Soccer Opens Ed Baber demonstrates the rigors of Soccer practice.
