September 23, 1983 The Lance D. Linn Returns From Korea Student Experiences the East By Paul Gilbert Kurt Linn, a member of the class of eighty five spent the last academic year m South Korea doing indepen- dant studies in theology. “This experience was typical of the St. Andrews oppor tunity, in as much as I, the student had to put out the in itial effort. And even after the first meeting it was still up to me to make sure the wheels of the whole program itept spinning,” said Kurt. With the help of Bob Ander son, Dean of International Affairs, they arranged this trip through the Southern Presbyterian Mission Board. In addition, Kurt needed to put off his sophmore SAGE courses to a later date. Sharon Stanley also took advantage of this new rela tionship between St. An drews and the Southern Presbyterian Mission Board and went to South Korea for the first term of last year. ecu Plans Activities By Reeta Roy Two weeks into the school semester-and the College Christian Union (CCU) has in store a virtual treasure chest of exciting activities, creative ideas, and in teresting challenges for the 1983-84 school year. The various area committees met and held their first meetings last week to steam up some plans for themselves. The Musical Celebration on Sunday night, September 18, 1983 was suported by CCU. Some enthusiastic, music loving St. Andrews folk have formed a gospel choir and participated in the Vespers service. Therefore, the St. Andrews students can look forward to space and variety in the Vespers pro grams on Sunday nights. One of the upcoming events this month is the Ice- SflcK. Cream Social on September 27. The social will be sup ported by thirteen churches from Scotland County. This time would be an excellent opportunity for the campus to have fun, make friends, and enjoy fellowhsip with people from around the area. The social will be held on the Belk patio at 7:00 p.m.-CCU extends a warm invitation to all. Another challenging outreach program the CCU will be involved in is the Scotland County Literacy Council. A survey revealed that one out of three Scotland County residents is illiterate. Volunteers are needed to spend time teaching folks to read and write. For further informa tion check the bulletin board outside the cafeteria, or con tact Sharon Stanley, Box 628. The CCU welcomes students to participate and have some input in any of the committees which would be of interest to them They arrived in Seoul, South Korea on the 25th of August, 1982. They were met by missionaries who took them to the Presbyterian Seminary and College in Seoul. Kurt spent the next five months living with other missionaries who were from third world nations, and at tended school at the Seminary. He took such courses as: Church in Ac tion, Shamanism (a study of Korean indigenous and animistic traditions), Christ and Culture, and Com parative World Religions. In addition to his courses, Kurt also taught English at the College adjacent to the Seminary, a very enlighten ing experience for Kurt who plans to be a college pro fessor. Kurt spent the next six weeks in Pusan where he got a chance to work and live with a Korean Minister of a Presbyterian Church. “I was bombarded with a countless number of subtle cultural differences-which at first I was unaware of, but later when I had a chance to be ac cepted into their community, I became aware of how redically different my way of thnking was from theirs.” Kurt then went back to the Seminary for another four months of studying. He then became aware that “most of the significant written theology coming out to date is from the third world.” The experience as a whole has changed Kurt’s focus of what he wants to get out of St. Andrews. “It has caused me to revamp my entire ma jor,” he said. Kurt is present ly working on developing a thematic major consisting of Philosophy, Religion, Politics, and Literature. He is also “kicking around the idea of going abroad again.” Yuriko Naitoh and Miki Horiguchi visit St. Andrews Japanese Students “Exchange” Views By George Robbins Two Japanese exchange students will be attending St. Andrews this year. Miki Horiguchi and Yuriko Naitoh are very excited about spending a year in the United States. The thing that they like most about St. Andrews is that it is a small school located in a rural area because Japan is more populated. Miki lives on the main island of Japan in Akashi Ci ty. She spent her freshmen year at Kansai Gaidai (Kan- sai Jr. College of Foreign Language) where she ma jored in English. The reason she wanted to come to the United States is that is has many different types of peo ple in one country. Japanese are all one nationality and she thought it would be in teresting to see how the American people lived with each other. Yuriko is a junior form Kokburji, a town located on the island of Shikoku. She is also an English major at Shikoku Christian College. Dr. Altman taught there while he was in Japan. Yuriko said she was surpris ed that America is so peaceful. She expected it to be more like Los Angeles or New York. It is interesting to talk with Miki and Yuriko. It is great to learn about different peo ple and how they view the United States. They both en joy meeting new people so I am sure that they are going to like St. Andrews.
