3 October 14,1983 I have heard many discussions in the hall and cafeteria about thefts and academic matters that relate to the Honor Code since the beginning of the semester. Many people seem to have very strong feelings about the Honor Code, and I have heard some very good praises and criticisms of it. This discussion, spon sored by the Special Events Committee, was hoped to be a useful and relevant discussion about the Honor Code and its role in our community. However, only three faculty members and approximately fifteen students chose to at tend the event. This very poor showing at the symposium is unfortunately characteristic for such an event on our cam pus. Lots of people like to complain about things that ef fect their lives here at St. Andrews, but there seems to be considerable apathy when the chance to do something publicly arises. The Honor Code needs to be widely discussed and understood by the students, faculty, and administration here at St. Andrews. A very good chance to do this was missed. Think about that the next time you hear someone complain. The Honor Code should be an integral part of the St. Andrews community, and I believe that for the most part it is. However, it is apparent to me that the Honor Code is not respected as nearly as much as it should be at St. An drews. Since the beginning of the year thefts on both sides of the lake have been much too common. The best example of this for me was the disappearance of my Organic Chemistry textbooks from the library last week. How well does the Honor Code work when one has to worry about leaving their books in the library for a few hours or whether or not they should lock their door when they go to the shower? eat Scenes of Fall Break at SAGA CCU Sponsors Volleyball Josh Brooks Fund Supported By Paul Verpillot On Tuesday, October 11th, Gill Street work began. Don’t forget the Vespers will be held at the Belk Center every Sunday night at 7 p.m. Their purpose is to unite all Christians in the St. Andrews community. They are interdenominational ser vices for all people. Also, Bi ble study will be a weekly event. St. Andrews Forum Dear Editor, I would Uke to comment about the lack of attendance at the Honor Code Sym posium Tuesday night. Other than a group of freshman that were “required” to be there, only four students and three faculty members chose to attend the discussion. As a member of the St. Andrews’ community, I find this disturbing. The Honor Code and events pertaining to it have been a much discussed topic on campus this semester, but when it comes to doing something to im prove it, no one takes the in itiative. In order for the Honor Code to succeed in its purpose it takes the devotion and effort of all involved, in cluding students, faculty. and administration. I feel the Honor Code can provide a great service to this com munity by promoting a sense of trust, responsibility, and freedom among the par ticipants, but only if everyone is willing to do their part. Everyone is committed to upholding the Honor Code, but it is only through fulfilling these commitments that St. Andrews can live up to its potential.
