These changes have been both frustrating and confusing for Coach Fedak and team members. But despite these problems the team has kept their high morale on and off the soccer field. Among those injured is returing junior Brian Schriber. He will not be see ing any playing time this year because of a broken foot he acquired before season prac tice. Another disappoint ment befell the team when transfer Bob Levey, who placed kicked for Wake Forest football team last year, sustained a knee injury which abandoned most of his hopes for playing this season. Freshman Madison Geer will also not see much playing time this season as he seriously injured his ankle earlier in the season. Last year’s MVP, Scott Dormire, injured his shoulder during practice and was unable to start in the first few games. Although he did see some playing time in the doubleheader in Virginia, he reinjured his ankle in the Methodist game and has been unable to play in the last few matches. Senior Dan Paracka, who was able to start in the first few games, sustained an ankle injury during practice. Although his ankle has not completely healed, he has recently returned to the starting lineup. Freshman Joey Costello who came to prac tice with a badly sprained foot, has been able to play in the last few games and has performed quite well. Although these players have been greatly missed, their subsititues as well as other starting players have given a 100‘?^o performance in the last few games and have compensated some of the vacated positions with some players who normally do not play in those positions. As for their team standing, the Knights are now 3-6 overall. Their victories have been won masterfully and their defeats have been taken like Coots Exhibit Spirit By Paul Verpillo Togetherness is the trade mark of the 1983 St. An drews Volleyball squad. The Coots have plenty of spirit and lots of enthusiasm. Every player has made a significant contribution this season. Despite losing their first three matches, the Coots pulled it together to field an eight and fou' overall record. St. Andrews is currently tied for third place in the DIAC with a record of 3-2. Recently, the Coots travel ed to Greensboro to play an always tough UNC-G team. Despite losing, St. Andrews played an oustanding game. Coach Jo Ann Williams was very pleased with effort her team exhibited. “Even though we didn’t win, we played with more intensity as a team than anytime before,” Williams said. The Coots have many outstanding players this year. Senior hitter Eva Pittman has great offensive power. Her superior height and jum ping ability contribute to her offensive prowess. Junior hitter Kelly Aker has im prove her offensive and serv ing skills 100% from last year. Senior setter Marie Col eman has been a strong defensive player this season. Against UNC-G, she turned in her best performance of the present season. The Coots do miss sophomore hitter Chris Devos who was injured after the UNC- Wilmington match. Her ex perience and blocking power is crucial. Still, Williams em phasizes a team concept, so everyone has an integral position to play. Many important matches will be played at St. Andrews through out October. The Coots will host the number one Conference powerhouse Greensboro College on Oc tober 25 at 6 p.m. They will also face UNC-G on October 31 at 6 p.m. Most of the mat ches at home will be against conference opponents, so they will be critical. Despited their success dur ing the Season, Williams feels that her team deserves more support from the student body at home matches. “Our kids work just as hard as any soccer or basketball players, but they don’t get the recognition,” Williams said. “We just wish more peo ple would come out and see us play. It really makes a dif ference.” The St. Andrews Coots are a hardworking dedicated team that deserves full support. gentlemen. Many of the victories, however, have been skillfully lead by freshmen Paul Fran- zoni and Jay Burney, leading scorers for the Knights. Paul came to St. Andrews from Trenton, New Jersey where he was an All-State player last year. Combined with the skills of Paul and other front linesmen, Jay Burney, a nor therner from Pennsylvania, has also lead the Knights in scoring thus far this season. The past week was one of the toughest of the season for the Knights as they not only traveled to Virginia on Wednesday against Averett, but had to remain here dur ing the fall break in order to play against Lander Friday and UNC-G on Monday. The Knights played excep tionally well, but it was not enough against #1 ranked Division IIIUNC-G. In the second half the Knights pressured the Spartan defense, who has only given up one goal in 14 matches, but were unable to find the back of the net. If St. An drews can continue to play this caliber team as well as they proved Monday, -they should have no problems with their remaining 6 games.
