PAGE 4 LANCE MARCH 14,1985 Knights Challenge For Dixie Hoop Crown BY CRAIG BREHON One word that might best describe the Knights in 1984-85 this season is ef fort. The Knights are cur rently 15-10, but most im portantly they finished 10- 4 in the conference behind the leagues hot shooting Hornets of Greensboro College. The Knights jumped off to a 4-0 early start and then lose 3 straight close games. The Knights season has been one of vallep and less peaks. The four loses in the con ference have all totaled up to 8 points. Senior guard Chris Whittin^on and Junior forward Craig Brehon have led the Knights in most categories this season. Whittington was 5th in the conference in scoring at 18.0 ppg, 1st on the team with 100 steals, and 12th in the conference at the foul line at 74 per cent. Brehon led the con ference at the charity stripe at 88 percent and was among the national leaders most of the season. He was 8th in the conference in scoring at 16.0 ppg, and 7th in Field goal percentage at 53.1 percent. Both were named to the DIAC-Conference team. Other mainstays that have played well this season are Martin Jones 10.1 ppg and 3.9 assists and Bobby Thomas 13.8 ppg and 7.9 rpg. Freshman players Tony Gholson, Keith Long, Ran dy Baker, and Vernon Jacobs have played a lot and gained valuable ex perience. Other high- points of the season is Coach Riley’s 150th win. He has alrnost averaged 20 wins a year since his ar rival at St. Andrews Col lege. The Knights hosted Virginia Wesleyan in the first round of the DIAC tournament and defeated the marlins 74-66 on Har ris Courts to advance into the semin-finals against North Carolina Wesleyan, whom they defeated 72-70 in double overtime. In the contest for the championship, St. An drews and favored Greensboro College played what may have been the best DIAC Tour nament title game ever. The Knights lost a 4 over time gruelling battle 85-81 to tne hornets. The- Knights ended the season at 17-11 and for the first time in 4 years did not receive a NCAA tourna ment bid.
