MONDAY, APRIL 8, 1985 LANCE PAGES St. Andrews Hosts Riding Championships LAURINBURG, N. C. - St. Andrews Presbyterian College will host the 1985 Affiliated Na tional Riding Commission (ANRC) Intercollegiate Riding Championships April 19-21. The ANRC is an affiliate of the American Horse Show Associa tion. The site of the ’85 champion ships will be Little River Farm in Pinehurst, North Carolina, in the heart of the Carolina horse country. St. Andrews, this year’s host team, finished sixth overall in 1984 in their first championship competition. The field for this year’s championships will consist of 14 of the nation’s top college riding programs. Inter collegiate teams from the University of Virginia (1984 champions,) the University of Florida, the University of Georgia, the University of South Carolina, Oregon State University, The University of Oregon, the United States Military Academy (West Point), Davidson College (NC), Virginia Polytechnical In stitute, Midway College (Ky), Sweetbriar College (VA), Goucher College (Md). and the College of William and Mary (VA.) Teams will consist of no more than three riders and horses with the best two scores coun ting toward team score. Other riders may compete as in dividuals. The championship will go to the college receiving the highest cumulative score for the three riding phases. In dividual championships will also be awarded. The three phases of riding competition will consist of a hunt seat equitation program ride, modified cross country and a hunt seat equitation stadium course. The program ride will test the riders over a predescribed equitation pat tern which includes American Horse Show Association (AHSA) equitation tests 1-16. The cross country phse tests the competitor’s equitation ability over a hunter’s trials course in open country. The hunt seat equitation will be judged similarly to United States Equitation Team Medal competitions. This year, for the first time. an optional fourth phase con sisting of a written theory ex amination will be offered. The examination will address riding theory examination will be offered. Judges for the 1985 Cham pionships will be Edna Lytle of Dickerson, Md., from the American Horse Show Associa tion and Marion Lee of Arl ington, Va., an ANRC National Judge. Elizabeth Clement of Toano, Va., will serve as Steward for the Championships for the third consecutive year. Champion ship Secretary will be Beth Dowd of Pinehurst, N. C. and Donna Evans of Southern Pines, N. C., will be Chief Scorer. Shelby French, Director of Riding at St. Andrews is the Coordinator for the 1985 ANRC Intercollegiate Championships. With a championship in the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association Region 9 Stock Seat competition already under their collective belt, the equestrian team will strive for even more championship op portunities in this league as the season winds to a close. St. An drews sends its team to na tional competition in Lex ington, Kentucky on May 5 and 6, where eleven other regional champions will be waiting to compete. Danny Robinson will defend at the nations his 1984 Stock Seat Equitation Rider Cham pionship, while Coleen Kelly will challenge him. An op- tmiistic note for the future is that Coleen is the only junior and there are no seniors on the squad. Fourteen first-year students and three sophomores complete the roster.
