SGA Sets Goals For 85 & 86
As part of the September 24
meeting of the Student Associa
tion Cabinet, we discussed goals
that each of us wanted to achieve
this year in our respective offices.
The following is a listing of those
goals. We hope this will let
everyone know what we are plan
ning to do, as well as who we are.
If you have any questions or sug
gestions concerning these goals,
please let us know.
As President, I hope to see an
improvement in the area of com
munication to not only students,
but faculty and administrations
as well. This is my main goal for
the year. Too often, the SGA has
made decisions and functioned
without communicating to our
community what we are planning,
where we stand on an issue, or
what we have decided to do. I
hope to see more student involve
ment in these decisions and issues
that effect them.
Nancy L. Prosser
Working as the Secretary of
SGA my goals are quite easily
defined. My main goal is to do my
job well and accomplish my
duties as expected. Other minor
goal' would be to get involved
wit! ny work and understand
what I’m doing and why.
Matt Wilson
What’s the Senate Up to?
Academic Affairs Committee:
textbook prices too high?
tutor resourse pool
Budget Committee:
getting budgets to clubs
Residential Life Committee:
SAGA breakfast hours
library hours
fire escape plans
gym equipment usage
house cleaning
Linda Mann
Senate President
I, Lori Dickey, am the
Secretary of Student Policy. My
main job is to establish a network
of communication between
students, faculty, administration,
clubs, committees, etc. If anyone
has any suggesitons or need for
specific information that is not
being brought to our awareness,
please let me know. Also, I will be
working with the students that
serve on the various faculty com
mittees in order to facilitate the
information presented between
the SGA and these committees.
Goals
1) Bring the Honor Code back
to the respectability of the
students, faculty, and administra
tion.
2) Treat each case on an in
dividual basis as fairly and
judiciously as possible.
3) Change four things in the
Saltire to bring about some con
sistency and get rid of some con
tradictions.
Rob Klink
Attorney General
After making the initial
budgeting process a thing of
history. Treasurer Dave Snyder's
goal concerns the Student Associa
tion's percentage of the overall
college budget. He wishes to assure
that the SA's spending keeps pace
with the total budget and to ne
gotiate an increase if necessary.
The goals I have set for the 85-
86 school year include the follow
ing special projects: I hope to set
up a Suggestion-Question box for
students. Students will receive
feedback to their questions within
two weeks. Another project will
be to serve as a liason between the
clubs and organizations of SA
and the SGA in order to facilitate
communication between the two.
I would also like to set up “town
meetings” in which students can
express their views to appropriate
college administrations. Finally, I
would like to look into the
possibility of moving the snack
bar from its present location to
the knight room.

SGA Update
Editorial From President Perkinson
For over a month now
students and faculty have been
busily re-acclimating
themselves to the joys and
rigors of learning. The ad
ministration hopes that this
chapter of your college ex
perience is progressing just as
if you had written the script
yourself. And, in fact, you have
to some extent.
Your success in preparing for
the future depends, in no small
measure, on the extent of your
own commitment to gaining
essential knowledge for your
chosen field and broadening
your intellectual and social
horizons. Your professors are
a learned and dedicated group
of educators, who will challen
ge you to exceU in the course
of that preparation. College life
at St. Andrews offers an array
of extracurricular pursuits
which can only enhance your
e^rience here. However, it
falls to you, each of you, to
make the most of this oppor
tunity.
The St. Andrews community
IS expecting an exciting and
successful year. Our fall enroll
ment figures have given early
credence to our coiuidence. As
you probably have heard, St.
Andrews’ total enrollment
(772) is the highest since 1972,
as is the number of new degree
students (293). Freshmen
enrollment also hit a thirteen-
year high. The number of
transfer and returning students
is higher than last year’s telly.
These numbers are significant
because they are indicative of
the quality of the educational
offerings of the college. Each
St. Andrews student can teke
pride in the fact that more and
more young men and women
are conclucUng, as you did, that
St. Andrews provides an excep
tional educational environ
ment. , ^
St. Andrews looks to its up
perclassmen for student
leadership. The Student
Government Association has an
exceUent leader in the person of
Nancy Prosser, as weU as the
other officers. But leadersiup
on campus involves more th^
policy. The character of the stu
dent body in general is deter
mined in large part by the
seniors and juniors. You in
herit, influence and p^ on
traditions and attitudes. We are
proud of the achievements and
the contributions of our up
perclassmen and we believe
you are setting some fine ex
amples for the sopohmores and
freshmen to follow.
We look to our first-and-
second-year students to fulfill
the promise of your prior
achievement.l It is your respon
sibility as members of the Col
lege community, to become ac
tive participants in both the in
tellectual and social life of St.
Andrews, for you are the
leaders of tomorrow. Your con
tributions to the quality of stu
dent life are vitel to the future
of the College. Your success
now and tomorrow is the
measure of the success of St.
Andrews.
It is my own hope that each of
you will accept the responsibili
ty that is now yours, that you
will meet the challenges that
await you and that you will
strive to be the very best you
be. The faculty, the dedicated
people in the Student Life office
and the rest of the administra
tion are here because you are.
It is our purpose to ensure that
St. Andrews continues to meet
the needs of your educational
endeavors. Working together
we cai? the St. Andlrew?
experience a true adventure in
learning.,
The Academic Affairs Committee
of the SGA is currently developing a
tutor pool for students seeking help
with courses. Members of the com
mittee include: Roachelle Bailey,
Joey Morris, John Null, Vicki Sher
man, Charlene Vhringer and Wayne
Rhodes as chairman.
An SGA Update
In this first edition of The Lance,
the SGA cabinet members have
listed a set of goals we hope to
achieve during this academic year.
My main goal as SGA President is to
enhance communication between
the SGA and the St. Andrews com
munity. In the interest of that goal I'd
like to take this chance to let
everyone know what the SGA has
been up to during the first half of this
semester.
A) Fall Elections.
Elections for the various positions
were held on Sept. 30. This allowed
us to fill some empty positions on the
Student Faculty Appellate Court and
Student Judicial Court, the Elections
Board, the Secretary and the
Treasurer positions for the CCU, and
to elect an editor for The Lance.
Overall, the Elections went well, but
voter turnout was low.
B) Saltire Revisions
If you were here last spring, you
may remember the revisions to the
Saltire that were presented to and
voted on by the Student Body.
These revisions applied mostly to our
Judicial System in the SGA. The in
terpretation of the ratification vote
was that the revisions were passed,
and they were then sent to the facul
ty for approval. It was at this point
that a question was raised as to the
validity of the elections procedure
and results. Also, it was late in the
Spring Term, so the faculty decided
to "table" voting on the revisions.
Nothing more was done with the
revisions during the summer.
However, at the Sept. '85 faculty
meeting, it was decided to return the
revisions to the Student Life Commit
tee, where the revisions were in
itiated. In the Oct. 10 meeting of the
Student Life Committee, it was
decided to divide the 12 members in
to Sub-committees whic. would
review the four main sections of the
Saltire in order to make recommen
dations concerning any needed revi
sions. Hopefully, by then beginning
of Spring Term, the SLC will have
some workable recommendations
read/ to be presented to the Stu
dent Body. A listing of the Sub
committees and their members
follows. Please feel free to contact
any of the committees about the revi
sions you believe are necessary or
needed.

vices: Felicia Allen, Dean Loftus, and
Linda Keener.
