Keeping G ANZA Afloat

As all members of the student
body should know, ExtravaGANZA is
in danger of losing part of its claim to
fame .. BEER! Changes in alcoholic
beverage control laws have school
administrators working together with
Ganza organizers in an attempt to
find a legal way to provide kegs for
Ganza. The Ganza Club, which is still
an idea on paper only, may provide a
cure for the ailing party. According to
club organizer, Henry Ogden, the
essential problem lies in the elimina
tion of ticket sales which include the
price for beer. Dues paid to the Gan
za Club would pay for the beer, and
club members would be entitled to
drink. Therefore, club members
would have to be at least 19-years
old in order to join. St. Andrews
Alumni would be offered the oppor
tunity of joining the club also.
The Ganza Club is an example of
the responsibility that students are
taking on to insure legal safety as
well as the willingness of students to
work with administration in a pro
gressive manner.

Skip Anderson Wins Chapbook Award

Skip Anderson of Laurinburg has
been given the St. Andrews
Memorial Chapbook Award for 1986.
Mr. Anderson's book is entitled THE
POINTED TO, and is a collection of
poetry. Mr. Anderson is a native of
North Carolina, but he has traveled
extensively in the United States and
Mexico. Mr. Anderson has been
greatly influenced by Sir George
Bruce, Poet Laureate of Scotland,
who taught at St. Andrews during
the spring of 1985.
The Chapbook Award was created
just over ten years ago in memory of
two undergraduate writers who died
untimely deaths. Students in Wilm
ington Dorm gave the balance of
their dorm funds to create the
memorial. Since that time, the Chap
book has continued to prosper under
the direction of the Associated
Students and the Writers' Program at
St. Andrews, and the book is
published by the St. Andrews Press.
Each year three hundred copies of
the Chapbook are printed with the
author receiving 50 copies, some 40
copies sent to newspapers and
magazines for review, and the rest
are sold to the public. Judge for this
year's award was Chuck Sullivan, a
poet from Charlotte, who has
published in ESQUIRE and ROLLING
STONE.
