From the Editor Dear Readers, I am extremely pleased to report that comments about the last issue of THE LANCE have been over whelmingly positive. The student body, college administrators, faculty, and even a few members of the St. Andrews' board of trustees have shown their support for continued growth and success of THE LANCE. The encoungement and support made a tremendous amount of dif ference as the staff put this issue together. Many people have made suggestions about how to make THE LANCE a better student newspaper, and I will incorporate them into our future plans. This issue of THE LANCE is very special as we help to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of our college and that all-time favorite St. Andrews tradition: ExtravaGANZA. Our Art Editor, John Ward, is to be praised for his hard work on the cover illustration. He has done a terrific job. In this issue of THE LANCE we are pleased to bring to you a special word from President A. P. Parkinson and TWO new columns: "Windows on the World", by Dr. Bob Martin, and 'The Arts at St. An drews," by sophomore John Brown. THE LANCE welcomes new staff member Kelly Hunt who is serving as Advertising Manager. On Saturday, April 12th, I had the pleasure of meeting with a few ad mitted students, and I expect to see between ten and seventeen of them join our staff next year. As always I encourage everyone to contribute THE LANCE and help make it your newspaper. Seniors graduating in May, remember that THE LANCE would love to print any poetry or prose that you wish to submit for the final issue. Deadline is May 6. Finally, I am pleased to announce that I have been appointed editor of THE LANCE for next year. I will do my very best to provide you with a high quality newspaper, and I hope to get THE LANCE ready to enter in to state and national college newspaper contests. To the Editor Dear Editor, I have always sincerely believed that the students here at St. Andrews were at least thoughtful and con siderate towards their fellow students' feelings, if not halfway in telligent as well. On Tuesday, April 15th, Maintenance painted over "the wall" so that the Ganza Core Com mittee could advertise "Extravagan za," and other students would be able to express any new thoughts, ideas, etc. That very evening, a few select students felt the urge to fill almost the entire wall with mean ingless graffitti. If I had not sketched out the Extravaganza design earlier in the day, I'm sure that portion of the wall would have been filled up as well. I personally know of several students who had planned to put quotes, sayings, and designs up on the wall in light of upcoming events such as the trustees' visit, alumni weekend, the 25th anniversary celebration, Extravaganza, gradua tion, etc., but were unable to do so because of -these people who un- thoughtfully chose to "hog-up" all of the wall space. In addition, the graf fitti that these students chose to use was pretty stupid, and even somewhat offensive. "The wall" was established (so to speak), so that students would have a creative outlet to express their ideas, feelings, and art. Graffitti which "glorifies Satan" and exposes certain persons sex lives is neither creative, nor does it con tribute to the St. Andrews communi ty in any sort of way. As several of us were out painting the Ganza Design on Wednesday, we heard nothing but negative comments from students, faculty, and administrators who passed by and read what was on the wall. I hope in the future, students will take into consideration WHAT they are putting on the wall, and HOW MUCH space they are utilizing. Hopefully, the wall can once again become a valuable, interesting, and intriguing part of the St. An drews community. Lori Dickey Students Voice Their Opinions About THE LANCE After THE LANCE reappeared on March 4th a survey was quickly taken to measure student reaction. The results are as follows: What suggestions do you have for making THE LANCE a better stu dent publication? "The Lance is great." "Have a paper come out once a week." (Staff response: With such a small staff and our current budget, that would be impossible. Would you like to join our staff?) "More opinion; comics; stocks." "I thought the last issue (March 4th) was the best ever." "More color might be nice." (Staff response: We have splurged on this issue but at $30 per color on every two pages, it can get very costly.) "More interesting photos. More in teresting campus-related articles rather than political." "Better writing of articles. More diversified articles." 'The March 4th issue was ex cellent and a great improvement." "Keep up the good work and keep it coming on a regular basis." "More articles and more student writers. I'm sure more participation is needed." (Staff response: You are absolutely right. How about joining the staff?) "Just having a Lance, in whatever shape, was a major improvement. But what was done was excellent." "Coupons from area businesses." (Staff response: We contacted area merchants a few weeks ago, and we hope to have some results soon.) "I'm very pleased that THE LANCE is finally back and in such good shape." To all those who took the survey, thanks for being so honest with us. We hope that everyone will feel free to offer suggestions about how to improve THE LANCE. Also, if you have a story idea, we would love to hear about it, or you may submit your own freelance work. THE LANCE is here for you, and we aim to please. All Th£ BOVS Arounp HERE ARE SO PUMB!
